Heater installation questions ??? Update 11/ 16 Got heat !!!

Post by kaptnkaos »

Hey Guys,

I'm getting ready to install my heater box and need a little guidence.
Not sure which control cable goes to which lever on the box.
Which water hose goes to which outlet/inlet?
Which hose should have the flow control ?
I am assuming that it would be the incoming hose coming from the engine to the heater core, but not sure which one is which.

Thank you in adavance...

Hey Flyboy...

Yeah I got that pic in my manual, but can't tell where the control cables go from it...
it was over a year ago ago when I took it out, now I can't remember how it goes back in..

kaptn, the hose from the H2O pump to the heater gets the valve. I don't remember which cable goes where on the Heater/Defrost. I turned the fan on and moved the levers on the side of the box to see which lever does what. The dash control moves them both simultaneously for some of the action. Also move the Heater/Defrost dash control to see which cable moves when in Defrost or Heater mode. The Temperature dash control moves the valve so don't worry about that. If all fails you got a 50/50 shot just wingin it.

Thanks 7DF250,

That helps... I am guessing that it probably doesn't matter which of the heater core inlet/outlets that it goes on.
I had saved pics from someone else's previous post with all the info. But they are on the computer that died so I can't retrieve them.

Kaptn,
Remember the pic of the low mile 70 explorer? http://www.fordification.com/images/70explorer/17.jpg it shows the heater hoses...

I have a heater control I bought earlier this summer for my highboy and it has all the cables hooked on it, when I get home I will get a picture of it and post it here and what each cable does. I haven't installed it yet... :o

Check back later tonight.

Kaptn,
Here is the heater control with the cables on it and the labels for them, viewed from the top. Let me know if you need anything else. :)

Ha ha..

Thanks Thunderfoot...
I actually did download and print the pics of the '70 Explorer so I got that part figured out.
With the info you posted on the controls, I just need to figure out which lever on the box itself does what...
It was dark when I pulled it out of the storage unit, so I can't even remember which of the levers on the box do what.
I have to also put the defroster hoses back on, which I think means pulling the instrument panel and stereo for access.
I had the cab gutted to do some rust control and prep for paint, now I need to put it all back together so I can use it until I am ready to strip it again...

Got you covered for that as well.
I got a replacement heater box for my High boy to go with the new controller :D this may be the next update for my truck if the other doesn't work to good this winter.

I think you can hook up the defrost hoses by just pulling the radio out and getting to them through there...

Here you go.

Thanks TF...

That's exactly what I wanted... I don't have much time for trial and error to figure it out.
I gotta do the install Thursday mornin' rain or shine...
I'm leaving Thursday evening to go to Redmond WA for the weekend to attend the Christian Musician Summit.

Thanks again Shayne...

Took advantage of the dry weather today and got the heater installed...
The install went smooth... I just have to add some more coolant...
Just about ready to head out.. Just gotsta take a shower...

I'm writing this on my new 'puter...
I picked up another Dell Optiplex GX280... one of the best Dell desktops made... Just like the one I got a few months ago that arrived DOA
I bought the new one from Pacific Geeks...
The DOA one had lots of upgrades this one doesn't have... I already swapped out the RAM
This one came with 256MB I swapped in 2G... made the thing wake up a bit...
The DOA one has a 250G hard drive and a DVD/CD-R/RW drive wheare as the new only has 40 G harddrive and a DVD/CD ROM drive.
I will be swapping those out in the future... right now it is just nice to up and running..
I gotta get goin' ... thanks again

it might not be the motr if it is working. it couldbe the switch or the resistor. those are what control the fan speeds.
