Nope, no updates. The fella from gasket works says he's out of .022 material and it will be two weeks before he gets more, so I'm going to get busy cleaning and painting parts and getting everything else done that I can. My drill bits showed today so I'll be able to drill and tap my intake for the vacuum port, plus drill and tap my heat plate for the barbs.

Im making my bottom plate out of a piece of alum. extrusion I picked up. Its about 1/2" thick. I made a paper pattern of the bottom of the Offenhauser intake, and sprayed the piece of alum. with paint to show where to cut, and where to drill the holes.
I had enough space for two plates in case someone needs one.

Looks good! I got my barbs from Home Depot of all places. The plumbing dept has lots of brass fittings in NPT.

Well, kind of an update but then a step back. Mordy at gasket works told me he was out of .022 material and it would be two weeks before he got some. I got kind of tired of waiting and decided yesterday that I was just going to go with a Fel Pro gasket and be done with it. I sent him an email canceling my order, then went out and installed the head along with the lifters, push rods, and rockers. So later I check my email and I've got one from him saying "I just got the material in yesterday!!" So of couse I'm thinking "thanks for letting me know dude  ..." Anyhow he cut it and shipped it today and I plucked the head back off. It should be here next tuesday according to ups. Since the "material showed" about a week earlier than he said I'm wandering if it was a case of my email lighting a fire to get it done, but it doesn't really matter. It's on the way now.

how much of a difference will the two head gaskets make on the compression?

It will raise his compression a little, but what he's really after is tight quench.
Joe, just taking a guess, it really sounds like a case of "oh sh!t, I had better get that done" to me.

I hadn't figured it both ways, but it can't be more than .1 or .2 difference. It's at 9.0:1 with the pistons I got, so it may be as high as 9.2:1. Like woods said, quench is the objective. Ideal is .040, but anything under .050 will give positive effects of cooler running, less ping, and better mpg's. With the .022 head gasket I'll be between .036 and .046 across the board.

Re: I'm building a 300... 2/04/12 top end assembled

Post by fomocoguy »

Ok, nice update. The gasket showed last week and with a liberal coating of copper coat I managed to get the top end installed. I primed the oil pump just to see oil flow out the pushrods and lube the bottom end since it's been sitting for quite awhile with nothing but assembly lube in there. Got theintake and exhaust manifolds installed yesterday, and the distributor is out to be re-curved. Pics!

Thanks guys! It's just about done. I need to find grommets and things for the valve cover and find a carb, but it's close. In the mean time I need to get some material so I can start fabbing up my engine test stand. For those of you just tuning in, my plan is to run it on a stand so I've got it as dialed in as can be before I do the swap. I'd rather correct any issues with it out of the truck than fight with it once it's in.

Well, not much of an update but some stuff is getting done. I have my raw materials to build my test stand and will be starting on it today. I think I'm going to buy a factory y pipe to run some type of exhaust out the garage and I need to buy a carb still. This is going to make woods cringe, but a lot of guys have had good luck with the 500 cfm Edelbrock on these engines and I think I'm going to buy one. It should be ready to go out of the box for my initial run and break in, and it will be fun to tune since I've never really tuned an Edelbrock aside from basic adjustments.

Motor mounts, stat and housing, alt bracket, and carb flange are all installed.

Any advice on where to get the proper grommet and vent pipe for the valve cover?
