This thread is going to be an on going long term project that any one of you can duplicate and hopefully learn from so that you can take some of the same steps I do and get positive results in your fuel mileage. Let me tell you where it began...
Two weeks ago my truck was running very rough. It never has got any better than about 9 mpg, but the last tank before any repairs got 6mpg. After some diagnosis I found a seriously worn distributor and promptly replaced it. With the new distributor in place and timing set at 8* btdc I went for a test drive. Even with it running well and smooth, it once again got 6 mpg!
So, why only 8* advance is probably what some of you are thinking. Well, my old 360 has always rattled a bit with any more advance than that. On a whim I decided to go ahead and bump the timing up with the new distributor, all the way up to 12* advance at idle. Well, low and behold, the next test drive showed an astonishing 15 mpg, with no engine rattle!

This brings us to my project. After seeing that double digits are possible, I am on a mission to squeeze all the mileage out of my truck that I can. Tomorrow I will adjust my tires to full inflation and make another run to get an accurate baseline mpg. I will fill her up at the same fuel station and the same pump and will make a dedicated highway run that will be my testing grounds for the rest of this process.
Here is the baseline info for my truck: 1969 F250 Crew 4x4
360 V8, 2 barrel, headers, Spintech mufflers with full 2.25" duals and h-pipe
4 speed trans
Dana 24 t-case
Dana 60 rear with 4.11:1 gear ratio
33x12.50 mud terrain tires
The truck is tuned perfectly, with a recent tune up and correct point gap and dwell. The carb was rebuilt and was tuned with a vacuum gauge. I made sure that every aspect of the engine was in good tune before beginning so that only the changes I'm about to make will effect the mileage.
SO, the first mod will be all synthetic fluids. I will fill the rear end with 75w90 fully synthetic gear oil and plan on using fully synthetic 50wt oil in the t-case and trans. I will change the engine oil for most likly mobil 1 full synthetic. Afterwards I will make another run and post my findings.
The next mods will include an electric fan install, a true cold air intake, and possible cam and tire changes. ANY ADVICE FOR FUTURE MODS WILL BE GREATLY APPRIECIATED!
Hopefully this wil become a helpful thread to all of us who seem to be spending more and more on fuel costs these days but can't afford or don't want a diesel swap.
Last, to the moderators: I wasn't sure where to post this, so if you deem it inappropriate for the general discussion area and need to move it I fully understand. Thanks!
