What paint did you use on your 300? Stuff is gleemin' !! Im looking for the same dark blue for my 302.

Mine looked like that when I first installed it.. But that was about 8 years ago I guess.. MIne is looking kinda sad now..
It got dirty, and some of the paint has started to flake in places.. I need to repaint mine, but I'd need to wash it..
I used the same "old Ford blue", which is a tad darker than "new Ford blue".
I forgot when I installed that engine.. I guess it was 2001, 2002 or so.. Time flies..
I'd also painted the firewall and fender wells before I put the engine in, and they are getting kind of funky too..
I noticed the driver side fender well has started flaking the paint and getting some rust.
My whole truck needs new paint.. Maybe I'll get off my can one of these days..

Well, I've been doing some research lately on head parts! Work is slowing down a bit, the laundry room is basically done, plus I managed to landscape for a swimming pool after having a patio poured in the bakyard for the fam to enjoy. Now I can get back into it a bit. I am making the head porting and polishing a priority, so I'll be starting on that as soon as I can. Thanks for keeping the thread alive! It keeps me going....

Drop the sucker in and tell me what MPG's it gets and how it hauls 6,000lbs
For now i am just cleaning up and coating my 390 with my por-15 kit since it runs fine.. .meanwhile i need to decide if i am going to rebuild it to tow or if i am going to do the same build you have done here...

UPDATE: Yesterday I cleaned all the misc parts off my workbench and uncovered the bare cylinder head that's been waiting oh so patiently. I also located my porting kit and scoped out my ports to get a good idea of where I'l be shaping and smoothing. That's about it, but it's more than I've done all summer. I'm still trying to figure out how to spend the least amount of $$ on cylinder head parts...

Boy, that's a good question. So far I'm about $1200 into it I think. All the engine needs is the head finished, but I will have more coin into parts for switching over from the FE to the inliner (like a clutch and flywheel for example) and having the exhaust modified. Seems how I'm doing all the head work myself I'll probably have $300 into it, but if I was having it done at a shop it would probably be a $800 bill for all new parts and porting. Machine work was the most expensive part so far (cleaned block, head, and misc parts, turned crank, bored and finish honed block, and decked block .010).

SO, if you ebay like I did and buy a used intake and carb you could possibly do it for about $1500 plus parts to do the swap.

So what do you do about mating the 300 to your 4spd that was bolted to a 352 block?

My boss had a '70 f250 with a rebuilt 300 in it that ran great.
One day i show up and it's gone, he sold it to the junkyard. I could of had a free 300.

Well, when I bought the first 300 it came with a 3 speed bolted to it. The bellhousing has the same bolt pattern to the trans as a 4 speed, so the plan is to use that bell with my trans.

It's been some time now, but I'm blowing the dust off this thread! I managed to get alittle work done on the cylinder head. I picked up a diamond grinding bit set for the dremel from Harbor Frieght and got my combustion chambers smoothed out. I also ground down and smoothed the short side radius (which has a big gnarly step in it from the factory). Last I smoothed the roof of the exhaust ports where the fresh air tubes used to come in. Not too bad for my first time! (I think )

Ok, well we're moved, my garage is all set up, and once again I'm in the mood to get this thing going! Today I took the head and all related parts to the machine shop for a valve job and resurface if needed. Then I finished my carb adapter for the intake. Since clifford intake manifolds are universal and use an adapter for whatever carb you are using, I just used a 1" aluminum spacer I had lieing around instead of forking out $50 or whatever it is for their adpater. Check it out:

I only had to do some minor clearancing to smooth the transition into the intake, basically like a port match. Now I need to drill and tap the side for a vacuum fitting and fab up a hot plate for the bottom for manifold heat.

My head is back! It didn't need anything extra and they said it really didn't need to be surfaced, but when I told him I wanted it absolutely dead flat since I'm using a copper head gasket he said they would go ahead and do it. A quick coat of paint and she'll be ready for action!

Spacer looks good Joe. Nice way to save some money and make it work. Ive just got to ask, Whats the blue on the chambers for Ive seen Magnaflux and Penetrant, cleaner, devoloper test done but there clean when finished. I know ill feel dumb when you post but somebody had to ask

Thanks! Yeah, I'm pretty sure that stuff is dye for crack detection. I had already ground on the chambers to smooth them out and clearance around the exhaust valve so Magnafluxing wouldn't have worked as well in that area. A crack penetrating dye like that will gather at the crack and make it visible where it otherwise would not have been. http://www.dymark.com.au/coatings/Produ ... roduct=795 I guess they just didn't feel the need to remove it since it should burn right off.

I guess the particular brand they use is purple, unless they use machinist Marking Blue for the same purpose.

Did you have valve work done by them or just crack checked and surfaced?
