You can choose to use them or as DuckRyder suggested, toss them. They seal the sides of the rear main cap where the cap slides into the block.

When you clean out your motor you should try a air nozzel with a pickup tube on it and a gallon of diesel fuel. Then you could wash the motor with the nozzel and flush everything down, just be sure to wear some safty glasses incase your washing in a corner and get some sprayback that it dosent get into your eyes.

The side seals are the rods and rubber pieces seen in the first picture here: http://books.google.com/books?id=yf_DRs ... ls&f=false

I need to run and get my parts soon, should i get new freeze plugs or what, its like they are leaking coolant and creating grease becaues of it, I'm not sure but they seem to be adding to the greasiness.
Isn't it purty?
I think it is safe to say i am the first to open this engine up.

Good lord, what wasn't leaking? I see grease, oil, road grime and rust...at least...

FE's take an odd freeze plug size, make sure you get the right one and brass if you can...

Ok just got back from the parts store. I went ahead and got a full Felpro headset because it was only a few more dollars and had tons more gaskets.
Also he called me crazy when i gave him 1-49/64 so i'm going to go back and bring an old freeze plug in when i pick up my oil pan gasket, at 3:00.
Ialso rented a valve spring compressor.

I'm ready to go.... time to start scraping old gaskets, cleaning and getting rid of all the debri!

Thanks guys for all the help so far

Critique my engine please :D
Do you see any problems? any good things? weird things? How many miles would you say it has, do you think it has ever been apart before?
I hope the pics arn't too big, I'm trying to hurry so i can go start scraping old gasket off. Your browser should resize them.
One of the pushrods won't even come out because the passage is so plugged with crap.
Oh and when i took the valve covers off yesterday, the bolts were very loose so i think that is actually 90% of the oil leakage.

Not too much stuff in here

oh i forgot to get spark plugs. Ill get those when i get the oil pan gasket and the freeze plugs..
Oh and i guess i better pick up a Napa Gold filter (wix) to replace that fram

It looks infinitely better inside than out.

Is that a steel shim head gasket I see laying in the drive way? Does it have "FORD" on it?

Hey, is that a block heater freeze plug on the right side front? Is the oil pump body aluminum or steel?
