Well, I have a pretty small work area so there is a darn good chance it would have got knocked over had I stood it up somewhere. I made sure it was contacting the bench in as many spots as possible.

Id still insist that the dufuss that banged a big dent into your crank should be at least given a week off with no pay, thats unheard of,he should of pressed the gear off,at the least ,,, Dumbass + Hammer + chisel + crankshaft = unemployment.

Well, after speaking to the boss I realize that it's not a place that will get anymore of my business. He acted a little upset, but I think it was mostly a front. I asked the guy behind the counter at the local auto parts store what he had heard about the place and he said "Nothing good" and left it at that. I plastigauged all the bearings just to be sure and everything looks good, so I think the machine work is good, but I still won't go back. There is a place a little further away that everybody has recommended to me since then, so next time I will go there. This place was just super convieniant since it's about 5 minutes away, and my neighbor said he's always used them so I thought I'd give them a try.

Looks great! Did you put any lube on the cylinders before installing the pistons? I like to soak the piston in oil before I drop it in.

Yeah, I brushed the piston assemblys, ring compressor, and cylinders with fresh motor oil. I'm probably going to drool a little 2cycle oil in each hole before the head goes on just to keep it lubed during the rest of the build. It seems like a good idea since it was made to burn and shouldn't leave much carbon behind.

They are Clevite pistons. Actually these are Silvolite, but clevite makes them. I've seen them listed as Clevite, Sealed Power, Silvolite, and Badger. They are stock replacements for 1977-82 engines. I've seen conflicting numbers, but the advertised compression ratio is somewhere between 8.8:1 and 9.2:1. There is a bunch of them on ebay; just look for the round offset dish. Just fyi if you are building a performance engine these are cast and may not hold up above 4500 rpms. They could start losing peices of the skirts. This is true for any stock replacement cast 300 piston. My engine will probably rarely see more than 4k.

Just a warning when a crank is laid on its side they warp. They are so heavy that the metal slowly bends over time and distorts the crank. I wish I had the pictures and movie on this computer we shot of Crower Cams. The rows of cranks standing up was like a city of tall buildings. with streets between them.

The status report is that there is nothing to report. If I were doing this build a year ago it would be finished by now, but having a 4 month old baby here now takes up about 90% of my free time. Basically mom gets mad at me for not helping enough if she's here and I go downstairs, so it's easier to just wait and work on it when I can squeeze it in (usually during Lily's numerous 45 minute naps and moms at work). Then I have to be real quiet not to wake her since the garage is under the house and my work area is under her room. It's a real pain having a garage like this; I can't paint anything, I can't run the compressor, and I can only spray a limited amount of solvent without stinking the house up. If I had known I would be a family man by now I would have bought a different house 4 years ago when I was home shopping for myself.

SO, the status is that I have all my core parts besides lifters and rockers and I just need to put it all together (the shortblock at least). Then my valentines gift is a get a whole day to myself, so when I pick a day she's going to go to her moms and I can bust out the compressor and the porting kit and get the head all ported and polished. Hopefully today I'll get a bit done during nap times...
