my 68 SWB has rollercam 5.0 out of a Lincoln towncar, edelbrock alum intake, edelbrock 500 cfm 4 barrel, duals, C-6, factory elec ignition, 3.25 pegleg rear, kinda fat 15 inch rims, power steering/brakes, no air and gets 13.5-14 mpg on highway if I stay out of it and I rarely break 65 mph. And, that's sharply tuned. I have had my Dads' straight 6 SWB Chevy (68) with no power options and my 75 LWB Chevy (no power options) and they both got 11-12 highway. My 00 F150 has 5 speed manual and small V-6 and gets 19 if I stay out of it. it's the overdrive that gets the mileage. I broke a gear in my C6 installing it and had it fixed and wish I'd spent the money on some type of overdrive.

My truck is finely tuned and runs like a top. I've got the dwell set perfect, the plugs gapped exactly, the carb rebuilt and smooth as glass at all rpms, zero exhaust leaks, and the timing set just about 3 degrees advanced from factory settings. Around town it gets 7-8 mpg, on the highway it gets 7-8 mpg, loaded with 5000lbs behind it it gets 7-8 mpg, and a mix of all of them gets 7-8 mpg. I check every tank.

It's just a 5400 lb brick with 4.10's, 33x12.50 mud terrains, four wheel drive, and an FE. The perfect recipe for 7-8 mpg apparently. I'd be totally happy with 11 after the build; 12-14 while behaving myself would be fantastic.

Well, mine has 2.25" exhaust already so I'm going to see how she runs with this setup first. I'm hoping with the 9.0:1 cr, bigger cam, 4 barrel, and efi manifolds that it can handle it and sounds good. If not I'll probably end up with a high flow y and single 3" pipe.

I've seen that vid; he used to hang around here quite a bit. It's pretty nice!

69 f-100 with 300EFI, TOD trans, gets 20MPG nuff said.

If your doing mods, go carbed. Make sure the engine you get has a clutch peg boss drilled out.

I will definetly do that; I'm going today to pick up a 1975 300 with a three speed behind it, so I should be good to go!

Well, I bought a motor. It's a 1975 with supposedly 133k miles on it. He had it all wired up and sitting in the frame so I could hear it run, which was nice. It fired right up, idled smooth as glass, and had no suspicious noises that I could hear so I plunked down the $150 and drug it home.

Took this when I pulled up.

Got it on the stand after taking the trans off.

How it sits now!

There is normal wear but almost zero ridge. Whomever owned it wasn't too good about changing oil or gaskets because it is filthy outside and a little gummed up inside, but not terrible. I can still see the crosshatch in the cylinders and there is barely any ridge, so I think a good hone will suffice. I'm going to pull the rest of it apart and clean everything real good so I can get a better idea of what I'm dealing with, but so far it's just filthy. Nothing a can of oven cleaner and the power washer can't take care of!

Is it going in your crew cab? In my mind a 300 in a s/4 ton 4x4 crew cab is kind of a small engine.

Yep, I thought the same thing at first but when I'm done with it she'll make more power than the 360 I have currently and do it at a lower rpm so it will be all good. They put 300's in F600's so I think it will pull my F250 just fine...

Keep in mind that in an F600, they usually had a 5-speed tranny and gearing in the neighborhood of 7.33:1. Most of them had a 2-speed rear axle, also.

I am far from a 300 expert, I'm watching this to see how it turns out.

A random thought:

Will it make more torque than the 360? :hmm:

My prediction:

The same economy for all practical purposes, possibly slower... :dk:
