Re: Idles good but dies when in gear...complete engine rebuild
Mech./electric is all personal opinions like so many other things. I have had one mechanical fuel pump fail to the point it leaked and that leaked out side of the block. I have heard of horror stories of pumps leaking inside the block though so if that is your worry then go electric. Just get a good one. I would think 7lbs would be close to pushing the needle off the seat and flooding a Holley though. Bet it would be too much for a stock Edelbrock.
If you leave off the eccentric make real sure the cam bolt does not bottom out before being tight. A one piece eccentric is about an 1/8" think or more so be sure of that.
I would call several cam companies and tell them everything about your truck and what you want out of it and see what cams they recommend. Cam choice can make or break how well an engine performs for sure.
A lot of people will choose a cam wanting a good sounding engine at idle. Most often it will run like crap because it is too much for the engine.
DOn't take the 1st word the cam guy tells you either, call several companies a couple of times each. Talk to the machinist doing your engine also. If he is a Ford guy he might now a lot about them also.
Have fun

Don't order anything until the machine shop is through with it.Dragon wrote:That crank needs turned and a decent under size is .010 so your engine kit needs .010 bearings and .010 pistons at least that cam will make a good table leg for the shop. When the bearings wore down to the copper the crank had nothing to cushion it.
It's very possible the crankshaft has already been turned .010 and the block bored .030.

Re: Idles good but dies when in gear...complete engine rebuild
Thanks for the hint!
Drove to a machinist in Munich today, with the block and the other stuff...that guy was a complete idiot..wanted 970,-€ just for boring the block 30 over...that´s about USD 1,200$!!! Normal price would be somewhere around the half..still awful expensive compared to the US I guess?
But it´s freakin hard to find a good machinist over here at all..and then find someone who does it for a normal price..damn
Will talk to a machinist that a Mustang guy from across the street of our shop recommended me tomorrow.
Ain´t no easy thing driving an American classic over here..

I know there is some nice Ford iron over there though. I was over there for a couple weeks in the 90's with the Air Guard. Going down the Autobahn and a Porsche came past us at about 150mph with a very nice 67 Mustang Fastback all over is butt. Once they went past the Porsche pulled over and it looked like the Mustang left him behind. Every Gausthaus (SP) we stopped at once people heard out accents they were buying us beer wanting us to send them back car and Harley parts.

Left a 7 Liter? What a waste! I know a guy has a real nice one. He'll put it in 4th and idle it down to about 25 mpg and stand on the gas. Thing is tuned so well it will just start picking up speed and get faster and faster without any lugging or spark knock until you let off the gas.
Nice car

Re: Idles good but dies when in gear...complete engine rebuild
Was at the machinist today. They measured the block and the crankshaft. Block has not been bored yet. It needs 0.020" oversize pistons and rings. The crankshaft needs 0.020" undersize piston and main bearings.
At Summit there´s only a rebuild set for 0.030"/0.020"/0.020" not for 0.020"/0.020"/0.020", so I´ll go for 0.030" over.
I left the heads at the machinist, they´ll check them.

Re: Idles good but dies when in gear...complete engine rebuild
The most common oversizes for bores are .030 and .060.
That's probably why you can't find a rebuild set for .020.
I've never liked using a crankshaft that has been turned more than .010, so I would suggest looking for another crank, if at all possible.

1966 the car changed hands. We came back to the US and Dad got a Fairlane with 390.Florian wrote:Why wasted? I´m sure it´s still around here...when did your Dad sell it, Dragon?

SCAT has made a good many circle track cranks not NASCAR, sprints and midgets. Crower cranks street NASCAR and Drag Racing.

Just because 1 guy says don't turn it doesn't mean it will break or not work for you. You can turn it or get a junkyard crank and turn it less or more depending on it's condition. I have run stroker cranks .030 under to reduce friction with no problems.

And I've seen cranks turned .020 that weren't hardened deep enough that self-destructed in less than 100 miles.Dragon wrote:Just because 1 guy says don't turn it doesn't mean it will break or not work for you. Not saying they're all that way, I just don't like one turned more than .010.

Re: Idles good but dies when in gear...complete engine rebuild
If you decide you need to buy a crank it might be worth looking into buying a stroker set up. You are buying pistons anyway. A 302 can use all of the torque it can get. Some stroker kits might also come with pistons, rods and crank all balanced ready to drop in after any work to the block has been done. I say MIGHT because I have never used a stroker crank or kit but think it might be worth you checking on. Others have much more knowledge about this than me as I have none and admit it.
I guess I should not have said wasted when I said that about the 7 Liter.
I am a red blooded American and hate to see good American iron like a 7 Liter not cruising Route 66.
Sorry.

Re: Idles good but dies when in gear...complete engine rebuild
Can the stock 3 gear transmission handle a 332cui stroker? What is the difference between internal and external balanced stroker kits? External needs balancing of the flywheel in combination with the new crankshaft and everything right? Which piston head volume do I need for a 332cui stroker? Can I still use my stock heads? Does the compression change with the stroker kit?
