Could I ask for advice on the March multi-groove pulley kit?

Post by robroy »

Good evening!

As I'm putting #50's engine bay together, I'm coming across old stuff that I meant to refinish but never did. And now I no longer have easy access to my sandblasting and painting stuff.

Here's my water pump pulley and some alternator brackets. Does anybody know of a source for chrome editions of these? I'd just like to save the bother of having to sandblast and re-finish them, and chrome ones would look nice after all.

Thanks very much!

Not chrome but billet- http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Billet-F ... ccessories
C.R.A.P. is another you'll see listed on Ebay. Also billet.
For pulley's, March make billet aluminum-

Hey Convincor, thanks very much for those links!

I like the looks of those pulleys a lot! It looks like March sells a single, stand alone V belt water pump pulley for $92.88.

Seems a little expensive but I guess it's a better part, and it would cost something to put a really nice finish on my old pulley anyways.

The alternator brackets look interesting too, but I may just do a quick re-finish job on those myself and keep the old ones.

Thanks very much for the great suggestions Convincor!

Hey Fordman! Yeah I hear you. It's expensive. Yet I'll bet making my old pulley immaculate and chroming it would come out to a similar price, or at least a big chunk of the price. And it would still be a steel pulley, not a light aluminum one. Maybe it doesn't matter much at all, but it's something!

Thanks Fordman!

After looking in to this more, I now see that instead of $97 for a single V-belt pulley from March, and an extra $100 for the brackets from Hawaii Racing, I can go serpentine /with/ the brackets for about $370. That might be a better deal since the serpentine belt would be more reliable and would make it easier to put a 3G alternator in (I'm under the impression that most/all of those have serpentine pulleys).

Here's the kit I'm looking at (19020):

In order to apply March 19020 to my engine, I'll need to understand how the currently V-belt crankshaft pulley comes off. If this a simple deal?

Image

Do I just unscrew the "A" bolts, leaving "B" completely alone? And are the "C" holes designed to work with a puller tool of some kind to lift the pulley off? I am correct in thinking that this pulley's separate from the harmonic balancer, right?

Thanks very much!

So the countersunk, allen-head screws in the holes marked "A" in the photo above are out--they came out pretty easily!

But the pulley won't come off easily. It's pretty snug on there.

Does anybody happen to know whether the pulley should pull off now? Do I need to use a puller tool on it? Or does that big bolt in the center need to come loose?

I'm avoiding touching the bolt in the center because I think that's the one that holds the harmonic balancer to the crankshaft.

Thanks very much for the advice!

Don't want to "bust your bubble", but that's not a serpentine setup.

That's nothing but a multi-groove belt setup.

It may be a BIT more reliable, and it looks pretty, but if you're doing the swap for functionality, you're pretty much wasting your time and money.

Hey 70_F100, thanks for replying!

Wow is that right? So the March kit is just for a multi-groove belt?

Now that makes me wonder, what's the difference between a true serpentine belt and what's offered by this March kit?

Thanks very much!

A true serpentine belt is used to drive a larger number of pulleys than what an FE has. Usually, a serpentine setup will drive 5 or more pulleys.

A serpentine belt will end up driving some pulleys off the grooved side of the belt, while driving others off the smooth side of the belt.

Hi 70_F100, thanks for replying!

So is the belt in a serpentine belt system the same belt that's used in the March setup? Is it just that the FE has fewer things to power with the belt?

Thanks!

right. just because it doesn't have five or more pulleys doesn't mean it's not a serpentine . It is a 6-groove serpentine belt.
As for the pulley coming off yours, just needs persuasion. It's a interference fit.
