Habu's 69 F250

Post by habu »

Here is my project that started out as anything but a project.....It's going to start off as a long story, but if I'm going to tell the tale behind my project, might as well lay it all out. So skip past the BS if you want and get to the pics

I have a '07 Mustang, partial daily driver, that I've done some modifications to the biggest of which is the Whipple blower. It's putting out enough power that I've been told it isn't a matter of if it'll blow up but when. Since it was, at the time, my primary vehicle I couldn't forge the engine to keep it safer than what it is now. My solution was getting a bump. My requirements for the bump was
1) 390
2) Automatic
3) Power Steering
4) Power Disc Brakes
5) A/C
Since 3-5 weren't standard options, I knew it'd be lucky if I got all three. The main reason was that, again at the time, I lived 5 miles from work, mileage didn't bother me and if it was reliable enough I could use it as my daily driver while I built the Mustang's engine.

I found my bump in Oregon from the 1st owner's grandson. It's all original and has all of my requirements of what I was looking for. According to the guy it ran well and didn't have any major problems even if the motor was tired. The plan was set and I would get my bump, drive it daily and build up the Mustang's engine.

Reality set in when it arrived on the truck from Oregon. The first problem was it wasn't white. All of the pics, crappy cell pics I guess, made the truck look white or off-white. It's tan, beige, light brown... whatever. A grandpa's color. Very bland I thought.

It's not white... :pout:

But it's something I can work with

When it came time to fire it up it literally had a fountain of gas from the carb under start conditions and throttle..... Took me forever to figure it out, but before I did I spent $$$ in a starter, battery, fuel pump, new Holley 2bbl and other misc items including a tailgate and a drivers mirror that was shattered. Still no matter what I did it would not run. After trying to beat it up to get it to run right, you know run it hard blow out any carbon, dust, years of going no more than 30mph, it ended up running worse. Turns out several valves were sticking open and to make matters worse it would NOT go faster than 45. I knew something was wrong. working over the engine to get it to run half decent took some hammering skills, lots of sea foam and marvel mystery oil and replacing all the u-joints and balancing the drive shaft. It finally started to run decently but was WAY down on power, didn't want to run cold and had several exhaust leaks.

Not being the brightest tool in the shed it eventually dawned on me that the bump was the project and not the Mustang :o

Fast forward about 6 months and I ended up getting engaged, married and moving 30 miles from work and since these things took precedence I had to sell my bump.

Two years later and my good friend in VA (I'm in SoCal) and leaving the truck in my driveway while he compiles the engine parts to complete the motor ended up being he wasn't putting any serious effort into finishing the truck or getting the engine rebuilt. Having come into a little cash I bought ol' Bertha back and finally, finally, finally am going to get a motor into the truck in the next month or so. My bump became a truck that completely frustrated me and having no feelings for it when I sold it to something that I am very glad I was able to rescue it back from the dead so-to-speak.

More pics will be posted later. Wanted to get the story down first.
As I get parts, disassemble, re-assemble and build I'll post 'em here. It's been awhile since I've worked on an old car and although I took forever this will be fun.

Thanks for letting me ramble.

No ramble at all-and we all learn from lessons I believe, (the tool thing). You have a lot of resources, (both people and literature) here on Fordification literally at your fingertips-don't be afraid to use it!
My truck is the same tan and I can say this about it...it might not be the "chick grabbing" color of your Stang, but it doesn't show dirt easily!
And congrats on "re-scoring" your bump!

That's a pretty straight looking truck! Not bad at all. You'll get the motor running in no time.

Awesome truck! Just a few small changes, and it won't look like Grandpa's truck for long! Interested in seeing the progress on this one, what a great base to start with (jealous).

And the story makes it that much more interesting - thanks for sharing!

Thanks guys   I appreciate it.

OK, let's fast forward a little....

What I don't have pics of, yet, and my biggest mistake besides selling it is.....

I put a huge dent in the drivers door. See the saginaw steering box has this spot that makes the truck really hard to turn. Welp backing outta a coin car wash I found the spot and was concentrating on not backing into anyone when my door found the pole before I did. OUCH.. :x Good news is way back I bought a rebuilt saginaw, I think it's the non-ford one, box from a member here whom I cannot remember the name that is going to be put in once the engine bay is empty.

so thanks to calfdemon, I have a new set of doors to put on bertha. They're straight and I think the window cranks work better than what I have. Until I get the motor back, that will be my next thing to do.

Motor situation. Found a block, heads, crank, pistons...etc from 4x4x4rv, through craigslist of all things, and now I have a complete motor at the shop. The motor looks good just gonna double check everything, hot tank, lite hone, mag and sonic test it. Will need to re-work the heads and crank. He's got everything he needs to build a long-block. I have the intake(StreetMaster) and MSD 8595k ready-to-run ignition from Jeg's, full ARP bolt kit including rod and head bolts. Crower 16915 cam, don't need anything too big and a new Holley 600cfm vacuum secondary waiting to be installed.

First things first, I had a set of Doug Thorley long-tube headers that I got from craigslist some time ago, before I sold it, that I finally got put on the old motor and full dual exhaust with magnaflows. It sounds soo good even for a wore out old engine. When it's time to break in the new motor I won't piss any neighbor's off by running open exhaust and I get to enjoy a little rumble ahead of time.

I owe pics and when I can upload them to photobucket or my gallery I will. For now :nopix:

Good deal! Nothing like duals on our old Ford trucks as far as I'm concerned. :pop:

Yep. It sounds SOOOOoooo much better. Even if it's a tired ol' motor, it still sounds great ! I'm gonna get much worse gas mileage cause I can't stop putting my foot down just to hear it

So here are a few more pics with the dent and the headers as best I could get with the phone.

This is more for me since there is no pics, parts porn or engine porn to go with this post y'all can ignore, LOL
Progress update:

Going to pick the motor up from the shop this Saturday, 12/15/2012 !! :D :D
Also buying a mini hi-torque starter from a ebay listing as well.
Need to get the Crank keyway
Need to remove the rocker assembly and put in oil restrictors

Still need inner fender and engine accessories (alt, H20 pump...etc)

Bought new heater control valve, thinking on spending the additional $$ to get the right one for the truck from Dennis Carpenter. $21 from napa and plastic vs. $50 from DC and metal. Looking at the heater routing currently not too sure about it. Compared to the trucks I've seen the PO did some funky stuff with the routing and I am entirely convinced he has something wrong.

Current Plan:
Get motor
What about exhaust ?
Assemble parts needed to complete, accessory drives
Get truck aligned
Get Video/pics of current motor running.
Will be used to sell existing 390
Take apart front end while I have time off.
Remove old motor
Remove old steering gear
Clean out engine bay/steam clean/repaint
Install new steering gear
Install new motor
Assemble front-end

Did you end up getting the doors on the truck yet? Glad to see you are still at it and would love to see more pics once you get some of the stuff on your list accomplished!

Sadly they are still in my garage.

The weekend after I got the doors I had headers installed, trust me this part is important..LOL, I then spent the next couple of weekends trying to assemble a new motor because the original engine shop "can't find a 390 here..." Anyway, all this running around basically dramatically shortened the life of the starter and it fried. The problem was that where I parked the truck I could not get to the passenger door open and could only squeeze into the drivers door. My drive way is very narrow, which makes it fun backing out without a drivers mirror. It seems that any time we plan on working on it the weather doesn't cooperate. But the week before xmas I'm off work and dad and I are planning on tackling the doors.

Actually starting to get all of the stuff together is really making me want to push the project along. I've got wish lists for Dennis carpenter, LMC, Summit racing... I'll sink some $$ into it but it's going to be a lot of fun.

I've always thought about how much money our trucks save us-versus therapy!
And I feel your pain in reference to the small space on where to work on the truck. Mine has always also had too little room, (especially now where there is no cover / garage / or barn to cover it from the elements). :(

It's been a month and the project continues to build momentum.

Got the new-to-me drivers door on. Now I can mount a mirror and it'll be easier to drive the beast. LOL.
'twas a pain lining it up but got it pretty good. it drops a smidge when I open the door, even though all hinge bolts are TIGHT.

Finally Installed.

Got the engine back from the shop. Now that the Christmas season has passed us, it'll be easier to finish. I decided to rebuild the trans while everything is apart. It will take longer to finish, but the truck will be in excellent mechanical shape.
So here she is. Not much to look at.... yet.

Engine
Image

Full crower cam and valvetrain, lifters, springs...etc. Went with adjustable arms to make sure no problems with the geometry and a Edelbrock streetmaster intake. A new Holley 650 vacuum secondary will sit on top of this as well.
Image

After replacing the stock starter already, I decided to go with a mini-starter. The solenoid is 180 degrees from the normal OEM placement. Will move it ever further away from the headers.
Starter
Image

MOre to come. Going to start stock-piling the parts now, alt, water, PS pump...etc. Will re-core the radiator as well as install a trans cooler. I think I said above I also have a rebuilt Bendix steering box that will be installed while the motor is out. When I take the motor out the whole front end will be coming off to make things easier on me. My wife also bought me a used cherry picker off CL this will also make my life easier not to have to rent anything.

Good work! The door dropping is probably due to worn hinge bushings. They are cheap enough to buy, just a few dollars.
This article should help you get that problem taken care of:
