What are these rubber inserts in disc brake arms?

Post by robroy »

Good evening,

While refinishing my disc brake arms (the chunks of metal that the calipers bolt to), I noticed these rubber inserts in the holes that house the caliper mounting bolts.

What's the deal with these rubber rings/inserts? Do they typically come with new calipers? Or are these part of the disc brake "arm?" And are they important to retain or replace, or may they be discarded without penalty?

Also, what's the proper name of the disc brake part I'm talking about?

Here's the photo:

Thanks very much!

im not sure what the name of that part is as it is only 2" of it, but i would say that is some sort of bushing and would most likely invest in a new one.

They are a caliper bolt bushing I believe. They are what allows the caliper to move as needed. I believe some parts places have replacements, but I am not sure of that.

not with the ones i bought for my 94 f250 they ddint. those were still on my brackets. they were still good. they have the cone shape thing over the head of the bolt on the newer trucks. i would guess they were that way on the older trucks too.

I would be interested in that info as well. I will be rebuilding a couple of calipers in preparation for a brake swap next spring.
Thanks!

Good morning! Awesome information, thanks for posting the NAPA part number!

I checked it out and made these observations:

1. Part 82113 does one caliper only; part 82113A does both.

2. Part 82113 is listed for 1972 F250's with chassis serial numbers up to M80001.

3. Part 82116 is listed for 1972 F250's with no serial number restriction.

4. Part 82116 has the description, "Heavy Duty Kit Services 1 Wheel Only."

5. The image of part 82116 indicates that it comes with fewer parts.

Here's 82113A:

Image

Here's 82116A:

So the question for all of us will be whether we should order part 82113 or part 82116.

My F250's chassis serial number is P60524. Since that's beyond M80001 I'm guessing that part 82116 would be right for me.

Of course I could talk to NAPA directly but you can guess what the result would be (chances are that the counter guy would have never even heard of our trucks).

Does anybody have comments on the 82113 versus 82116 question?

Thanks!

Upon closer inspection, it appears that the only parts from the bushing kits that are currently installed in my arms are the metal (silver colored) bushings with the rubber inserts in the middle. I don't see anything like those big springs or the other parts there.

Does anybody else recognize all the parts in those kits?

Thanks!

The springs go in between the brake pads on the top and bottom guide bolts inorder to seperate them away from the rotors when not in use.
