Replace gearshift tube bracket bushing and increase bushing bore size.

    1. Remove steering column.
    2. Remove three screws retaining shift tube bracket to column and slide bracket away from column.
    3. Remove shift lever pins and remove shift lever bracket.
    4. Remove lube fitting (manual only), turn bushing, remove pin and disassemble lever and shift assembly.
    5. Inspect bracket bores and hone to .823 inches.
    6. Thoroughly clean tube, bracket and lever bores and lubricate shift, levers and bushing with ESB-M1C31-A lubricant.
    7. Install new bushing (C8UZ-7335-A, Class B) and assemble bracket and its related parts on the shift tube and retain with lock pin.
    8. Position shift tube on steering column and install the three retaining screws. Tighten evenly and torque 4-6 ft .-lbs.
    9. Replace steering column.

The bushing lubricant cycle is each 6,000 miles.

MANUAL TRANSMISSION:
The lubricant fitting is accessible through the grille with an extension used on a hand grease gun.

The lower exposed section of the bushing should be lubricated through the grille with a long handled small brush. The upper exposed section of the bushing is accessible in the driver's compartment. (Reference Figure 6.)

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:
No lubricant fitting required. Lubricate lower and upper section of bushing the same as manual described. (Reference Figure 7 .)

In addition, if the vehicle is driven in an area with high road splash contamination, fabricate and install a metal splash shield as follows:

Procure a piece of light gauge (1/32" thick approx.) flat metal stock 19-1/4" x 14". Mount the shield behind the grille in the following manner:

    1. Make a 90° bend 3/4" from the top to fit inside the upper grille flange (Figure 8 ).
    2. Paint the shield black on both sides.
    3. Position the shield behind the grille so that it blocks the grille opening, in front of the lower transmission shift bushing. Retain the shield in this position with "C" clamps.
    4. Procure two pop rivets, or round head bolts and nuts, 1/4" diameter and drill two holes through the upper grille flange and shield to accept the rivets or bolts. Do not mount shield at this time.
    5. Remove the left license plate retainer and drill a 1/4" hole in the shield through the retainer hole.
    6. Mark the shield where the letter "D" mounting stud contacts it.
    7. Remove the shield, drill a 1/8" diameter hole at that point of contact.
    8. Reposition the shield, install the rivets or bolts in the top flange and a 1/8" bolt and nut in the left license plate retainer hole.

NOTE: For painted grilles, paint the rivet or bolt heads to match; for chrome grilles, the use of aluminum rivets or plated bolts is satisfactory.
