WEBMASTER'S NOTE: The following is an ongoing project
by Wes Adams to build a "Poor Man's 427", using a Ford FT 330 block
and other 'cast-off' parts. The posts were saved from the FordFE.com forums
and reposted here with Wes' permission.
I'm glad that you guys like
this kind of stuff as much as I do! I have a kick ass issue of
"The Poor Man's 427" for ya. So sit back and enjoy the show!
I told you guys that I would show you how we are going to check
the deck! If you remember a looong time ago when we decked the
block to true it up. Well here we go:
Here we have the piston
hanging on the rod. I will show you how to do that in the next
few issues. We are going to use the same one in all the holes.
We also installed the rod bearing on the rod. We're not going
to install the cap on the rod...we just want to do a quick check! Man is that HUGE!
Here's the tool that we're going to use to check deck height. Make sure you use
the deck to zero it out, so you'll know how far down the
piston is in the hole and how true your deck is
to the crank.
Here is the #8 cylinder in
the block. The piston sets .026" down in the hole from the deck.
As you can see on top of the piston we marked it to make sure we put
the gauge in the same spot every time.
Here is the #5 cylinder...and it's .026" down in the hole. I know you cant believe it but
I can. That tells us that the left bank is true to the
crank!
Lets go ahead and check the
right side of the deck. Here we got the #1 cylinder. It sets
.026" down as well.
Last but not least the #4
cylinder...and we have a winner here! I should play the lotto I think.
It sits .026" down in the hole as well.
That's damn good for a stock 390
crank...and its not a blueline crank. It goes to show if you have
a good machinist that it should look like this. Our compression
ratio will be
the same across the board. Its a good thing.
I hope you enjoyed this! Have a good night
and take care. If you have any questions please call or shoot me an
