WEBMASTER'S NOTE: The following is an ongoing project by Wes Adams to build a "Poor Man's 427", using a Ford FT 330 block and other 'cast-off' parts. The posts were saved from the FordFE.com forums and reposted here with Wes' permission.

Installing the BIG STICK for "The Poor Man's 427"

February 12, 2006 at 8:31 AM

You are in for a Kick Azz Issue of "The Poor Man's 427". You've heard the saying "walk softly but carry a big stick". Well, we have one to install today! Here we go:

For those that haven't seen the cam card before, here you go! YES, we're going to run this on the street with our high compression ratio! Why not...we have it!
Here are the valve springs for this guy...but we'll get to that in the future issues.
Take a look at this beautiful thing...that is one hell of a stick!
I want to thank ol' Tommy-T for the parts for "The Poor Man's 427". He donated the pistons, roller cam, roller lifters, springs, and headers for the car! I will thank others as we go on with the other issues for this project!
Next we apply some assembly lube to the cam journals on this killer stick of ours!
Next, you want to install the cam with the pin facing toward the front of the block.
CAUTION: Be very careful when installing the cam in the block. Take your time and don't force it in! You can damage a cam bearing when installing!
Here we have the thrust plate we're going to use for our project. This is the order of install.
We use assembly lube for the roller bearing before we install it.

CAUTION: Make sure you dummy up everything. We had to shave .090" off the back side of the cam gear (when using a roller thrust plate)! Sorry I didn't show that part of it.

I used an impact driver to install the thrust plate on this guy. I used the stock screws for the install.

Note: You can use a stock thrust plate. Roller cams don't walk like a solid cam does. We didn't need to use a roller plate but we had it to use.

Make sure that the key is installed on the crank!
Next you can install the timing-chain setup. Line up the marks on the upper and lower gears to get you started on degreeing the cam. (It might get you close...or I should say maybe a good starting point).
CAUTION: Do not run the cam this way until you degree it in! I will show you how to do that in the next issue.
Next use assembly lube on the roller lifters before install.
Go ahead and install into the lifter bores.

In the next issue I will show how to degree the cam in using two methods! I hope this has been real helpful for you guys! If you have any questions PLEASE shoot me an e-mail or give me a call.
