WEBMASTER'S NOTE: The following is an ongoing project
by Wes Adams to build a "Poor Man's 427", using a Ford FT 330 block
and other 'cast-off' parts. The posts were saved from the FordFE.com forums
and reposted here with Wes' permission.
Hi Everyone,
I have been sooooo busy trying to get the Northwest 2nd Annual
FE BBQ ready and trying to get this "PIG" done and on the
road!!!
Grab your favorite beer and a bag of chips and enjoy! Hell this
is better then any Superbowl if you ask me! I don't know
about the rest of you but I'm a true gear head.
Here we go!
We are
installing the mains in the block and getting ready to lay the
crank in.
As you
can see, we did line up the oil holes with the main bearings.
You don't need to do this but we thought that we should! The
choice is yours.
We laid
the crank in the bed and checked to see how it fits.
And yes, we did put it in dry.
We
torqued the mains down to 105 foot-pounds with some Plastigage.
If you kept up with the past post I showed how we came up with
the clearance before. We should have .003 clearance. If you
don't have the tools to check then this is a OK way of doing it...not the best but it'll help in a pinch.
As you can see we have .003
clearance like we wanted!
Here you
can see where the Plastigage hit on the main bearing on the
cap. Look at the oil hole.
After we did some checks on the crank, we
took it back apart to wash out the cylinders. We have a pan with
some nice warm water and Liquid Spic-and-Span. Yes, you heard me
right. I shouldn't show you guys all the tricks but what the
hell.
Next we
take a lint free towel to wipe out the hole.
I know that you're thinking
that this block has been washed how many times? It
should be clean right? Well you better think again
on that! This is what is left in the cylinders
before assembly. It's a really good idea to make sure
that they're clean. Like I always say, "A clean
engine is a very happy engine".
I hope that you got a kick out of this and
maybe got a little knowledge out of it. I have a ton more post
for ya! Next I will show how to install the crank and check to
see how our deck height turned out. Then we will install the cam
and show how to degree it in. Then I will show how to use Devcon
to float the floor of the block. After that then we are to the
point of file fit the rings and install the pistons in the holes.
Stay tuned for some more of "The Poor Man's 427"!
