WEBMASTER'S NOTE: The following is an ongoing project
by Wes Adams to build a "Poor Man's 427", using a Ford FT 330 block
and other 'cast-off' parts. The posts were saved from the FordFE.com forums
and reposted here with Wes' permission.
I'm sooooo sorry it has taken
me this long to post on "The Poor Man's 427"! But we started back
up here today. So sit back have some pizza and a cold ass beer.
Check it out.
Today we start off with the crank shaft for our project! Its a
plain 390 crank. It was free and we could use it. Remember,
this is stuff that you have in your shop that you might be able
to use. That is why I call it "The Poor Man's 427". I hope this
helps you out in the future on what to look for and what is
right! I'm learning as much as you guys are in this world of FE's.
O.K. Here is the crank for this beast! Nothing fancy here.
But it's in good shape for what we are trying to do.
Here we have it chucked up to do some polishing on the crank to
see what we have to work with here!
As you can see, I'm polishing the crank with a Scotchbrite
belt, just to knock out the high spots on the crank! And yes
that's me behind the crank polisher.
Here is Bill (my Uncle) micing out the crank. You want to mic
out everyone.
Here is what the
book calls for on the
measurement of the crank
(rods & mains). Sorry the pic is a little dark.
Here
are the measurements that we came out with: mains are 2.739
(on the high side) and rods are 2.4285 (on the low side). The
crankshaft is .010/.010 Under.
Crankshaft
Polishing:
If your crankshaft has to be polished, make sure that it's done
by someone who has a polishing machine. The crankshaft "MUST BE
POLISHED IN A CERTAIN ROTATION & A CERTAIN RA FACTOR." If the
crankshaft is not polished correctly, you may cause many more
problems than you can believe. You can make your crankshaft
throws look like a hourglass! SO BE CAREFUL!
Next we will talk a little bit on
bearing mics! Here is one that
you will need if you do this kind of work!
Look at the rounded end of the
mic. This is what you need to
measure out the bearings.
This would be the proper tool for the job.
In the next GREAT
issue of "The Poor Man's 427" we will talk
about "clearances" and what we need for what we are trying to
do...how to figure out what oil clearance that we will run for
this BEAST!!!
I hope you all have enjoyed this
great project like I have. If
you have any questions or to B.S., you could shoot me an email
