Clutch Diagnosis Procedure
(All Light Truck With Manual Transmission)

WARRANTY STATUS: INFORMATION ONLY

The following chart used with the Shop Manual will assist in diagnosing many common clutch complaints in a minimum amount of time and effort. Evaluate vehicle for verification of customer complaint. Identify problem in the following chart and proceed with corrective actions in the order given. Evaluate vehicle after each step to determine if problem was corrected before proceeding with further corrective steps.

PROBLEM CAUSAL FACTORS CORRECTIVE ACTION
Start-Up Chatter
During light clutch engagement in low or reverse External - Engine Roughness Tune engine. Set to proper idle speed
External - Equalizer bar misalignment and/or end play excessive or wrong part Readjust per Shop Manual
External - Engine misaligned. Not properly seated on mounts Loosen mount bolts, align and center engine so mounts center in teardrop holes
Internal - Oil on clutch disc Correct leak, replace disc, clean pressure plate and flywheel friction surfaces with clean solvent
Internal - Glazed flywheel surface Deglaze flywheel surface with coarse emery cloth, stroke parallel to machining lines
Internal - Disc warped or bent (little or no reserve) Replace disc
Internal - Pressure plate attaching bolts loose or missing Replace broken or missing bolt - Torque to specification
Internal - Clutch housing loose or misaligned Realign as per Shop Manual
Internal - Pressure plate fingers bent, out-of-plane or sticking (will not return - hung up) Replace pressure plate
Internal - Release lever (fork) bent Replace release lever and/or fulcrum bracket in clutch housing
Clutch Inoperative Pressure plate release finger fulcrum pin missing at drive lug Replace pressure plate
Clutch Noise
Squeal (Engine idling - clutch released when cold) Grease on pilot bearing - prevents oil from sweating out of bearing Replace pilot bearing - seat properly in crankshaft, do not grease, clean input shaft pilot and apply coat of light oil for initial lube only.
Pilot bearing in crankshaft not square with crankshaft (misaligned) Replace pilot bearing as described in foregoing paragraph
Clutch housing misalignment (pilot bore and face runout) Align housing as per Shop Manual
Squeak (Engine off) No lube on equalizer bar bearings Remove equalizer bar, pack ends with lube and replace spherical bearings
No lube on release rod bushings Replace bushing, upper and lower applying lube to inside and outside of bushings prior to assembly
No lube on release lever at fulcrum and release bearing hub retainer clips Remove release lever and bearing Daub lube under leading edge of retaining clips
Binding of Pressure plate release fingers Replace pressure plate
Scrubby Pedal Action and Feel No lube at release lever fingers and on back face of release bearing Daub grease under leading edge of retaining clips. If clips are open or bent, replace hub and bearing assembly
No lube in release bearing hub (dry transmission input shaft, input bearings, retainer) Replace release bearing and clean transmission input shaft retainer with solvent - do not lube
Rattle - Engine Idling Clutch Engage or on Light Engagement No freeplay (constant running release bearing Check and reset pedal height then adjust freeplay
Pedal hang-up (pedal does not return to stop) Dry pedal pivot shaft - lube pedal pivot shaft
Failed release bearing Replace release bearing - daub grease under leading edge of hub retaining clips
Slipping Clutch
Insufficient freeplay at release rod bullet. (Excessive slippage will cause burned out clutch.) Readjust freeplay at release rod (bullet)
Oil on disc assembly (also causes clutch chatter) Replace disc after washing flywheel and pressure plate friction surfaces with clean solvent
Transmission-Related Problems
Gear Clash Insufficient clutch reserve (excessive clutch freeplay and/or clutch pedal set too low Check and reset pedal then adjust freeplay
Disc warped or bent preventing full release Replace disc
Clutch housing misalignment Realign clutch housing per Shop Manual
Pressure plate release finger hang-up Replace pressure plate
Nicked or galled splines on clutch disc or input shaft. Heavy or dry grease on splines Clean disc hub splines and input shaft spline of all grease. Remove nicks or galled areas with file
Gear Jump-Out Clutch housing misalignment Realign clutch housing per Shop Manual. Also refer to transmission problems for corrective action
Noise - Clutch fully engaged Transmission problem Refer to transmission problems for corrective action
