Exhaust Manifolds for 360 V8

Post by TexasTruck72 »

I was curious if anyone knows if there are any stock exhaust manifolds available for a 360 V8 that had the hot air choke configuration on the passenger side manifold? I'm thinking about replacing my originals(due to deterioration and leaks) and would like to continue running the hot air choke. I have seen that National Parts Depot has the manifolds in stock but haven't verified if they would work with my hot air choke.

Fyi- This is for my 76 F150, although I went through this exact same scenario a decade ago with my 72 F-100. I wasn't able to source manifolds set up for hot air choke so I ended up running some copper tubing down and around the exhaust pipe and back up to the choke. It's worked ever since. Don't mind recreating that set up on my 76 F150 but it would be nice to know if there are manifolds available with the hot air choke configuration.

Thanks.
Jack

Jack,

I can't help you with the "LOG" manifolds, (one main reason I always hated the 360 engines) but...

When I hooked up a newer 70's set of exhaust manifolds to my 71' DRW F-350 I too opted for the "stove" hot air choke.
And when I hooked it up I also confirmed the bore down into the manifold does not go all the way through to the exhaust port, (hence "hot air" NOT "hot exhaust". If i had to do it again i would not hesitate to carefully locate and drill a 1/2" deep hole down into the PS exhaust manifold, (believe the diameter is around 1/4" but don't quote me on that). Then you can easily fab steel brake line to run, (versus trying to find an obsolete OEM steel line to fit).
Good luck with it as I loved my hot air thermostatic type choke, (versus electric that always seemed to have a mind of it own LOL)!

There used to be a kit that you could drill and tap into the manifold to isolate it.
You don't want to just stick a tube into the manifold, because the exhaust gases will ruin the choke unit.
(my cousin did that once.)

I'm pretty sure the bore or drilled hole in the manifold doesn't go all the way through?
When I hooked it up on my 71' stock OEM manifolds I confirmed that with a drill bit before mounting them.
But agreed if it does the exhaust could even pose a fire hazard as far as I'm concerned.

Correct.
I see Dorman has a kit , but it doesn't look like I remember.

At 62 my friend and having been put to sleep for 9 different critical care surgeries/a brain tumor/cancer and many other issues I'm thankful for what memory I have left, (Dad is 88 and his Alzheimer's is taking a toll on him now nice to look forward to in my future huh)? :(

Thank you everyone for your replies. I ended up locating a set of original Ford exhaust manifolds that have been reconditioned and the passenger side manifold has the correct hole for the hot air choke. I plan on having an exhaust shop swap these out soon along with new gaskets, etc.
