what size wrench is needed for oil drain plug!

Post by sharkdog »

Hi, there
just trying to remember what size wrench is needed for the oil pan. I haven't had my truck on the road in a few years so haven't changed the oil recently and forgot I cant fit a socket in there and most of my wrench's are metric. last time I changed it I was at a friends and used his wrench.

Thanks

You can use you 19mm socket, thats what I do.
So I think that makes it 3/4”.

V8’s must be different different than the 300-6. (Assumed they’d all be the same).

I have several pans from FE engines and there are both sizes 3/4" (19mm) and 7/8" (22mm). I think 7/8" tends to be more common. I would suggest using a 6 point wrench if you have one. It is common to find these things over tightened or "pre-stripped'.

I believe the older ones were all 7/8 , when the threads got bad there is an oversize self tapping plug.
Those tend to be 3/4 (19mm)
