transmission swap

Hello Fellas,

I'm looking to swap my 4-speed trans to a 5 speed because the granny gear is killing me. What are my options? (Sorry, I'm posting my question here because of no replays on the drivetrain forum.)

You can use an adapter that goes between the truck bellhouse and a t5 from a fox body mustang . I did this it was fairly easy. Mine was a three speed small block. The drive shaft will have to be shortened and you have to move the transmission cross member back. There may be other ways to do it but this was the simplest for me. You don't have to change the clutch linkage or a different clutch or flywheel this way . This will work if you have a small block or a straight six not sure about an fe engine.

I put a m5od trans out of a 94 f150 in my highboy. Its not the strongest transmission according to most of the truck forums out there but i have no complaints so far its holding up to my 351c swap i just did but i dont really beat on my stuff anymore so i cant tell you its right for you. I guess if u wanted a stronger trans you could get a hold of a zf5 for a small block you would still have the granny gear i believe but you have overdrive as well. Either way you go with those 2 you have to run a hydraulic clutch which requires some clutch pedal arm modification and cutting a hole in your firewall to mount the clutch master cylinder to. Its not a bad idea to reenforce the firewall if you go this route cause it will flex a little. Some trans tunnel modification is needed as well. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the replay fellas. I'm definitely wanting to go with a fox body t5. My biggest question now is, how will my clutch linkage work with the T5.
I don't want to switch to a cable linkage or hydraulic. Did any of the early model t5 come with a z bar linkage? Or would I need this clutch linkage?

You don't have to mess with the z bar if you use the adapter I mentioned above. It is the simplest and cheapest way to get what you want. I got mine from ebay it is for a classic mustang t5 swap but it fits the trucks also.

You use the truck z bar and bellhouse with what I mentioned above
