front end wandering

Post by jeepsteve »

New to these trucks so this might be a dumb question. My 250 wanders all over as I'm driving, no matter how smooth the road is. When I got it the guy had a list of maintenance items needed and it listed minor king pin play. Would that cause this issue, and while I'm in there, what else should I replace?
Thanks.

Is it just a badly worn steering box? That is something that causes unresponsive steering, but with a light touch on the steering wheel and some practice, you can get used to it until you get it replaced.

Check your radius arm bushings, axle pivot bushings, tie rods and steering coupler (rag joint).

I had this issue with my '71 F100. I replaced the rag joint and had my steering box rebuilt, as it had a small leak. The wander is now gone, and the steering is more responsive to input at the wheel...much more enjoyable to drive now.

Thanks everyone, I'll start looking at all those and get parts ordered.

You can see all the components and how tight - or loose they are when you get under there while someone wiggles the steering wheel back and forth. :hmm:
