shift tube install

Post by kotterhagen »

:? Hi All - I have a '70 f250 automatic and am having a tough time figuring out how to get the shift tube back in place.

I removed the shift tube to test fit a new shift collar. I was able to easily remove the shift tube and spring - now I can't seem to get the bottom tab back into the shift arm slot, preventing me from reassembling the steering wheel.

I have read through the shift column rebuild topics including the well-detailed post about a full rebuild by sargentrs http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... hp?t=72274.

Any advice or tips to get the shift tube back in properly would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks all.

Not sure if this will help, but here is a youtube that shows in good detail how he put his steering column back together:

Ok so after much experimentation the method that works was to just take out the column. Thanks for all the great walk thru's - I was able to get the whole column out, lubed up, re-assembled and learned more fun parts of the system.

Congratulations! That write up was my 2nd rebuild. My 1st was a 3spd manual column. Took it apart 3 times before I got it back together and it functioned properly. Kept forgetting things   :x
