Firewall lip sealer

Cleaning up my firewall for painting. Pressure washed and de-greased it and the sealer or whatever they used on the lip, I guess the spot weld area from the firewall to the floor board, fell apart or just came out. I removed the rest and am assuming the sealer was there to keep from collecting water?

So, what can I use for a replacement?

I would use either one of these to keep out moisture from collecting in that trough.
Clean it out first with a wire brush, tape it off and lay in the product. No need to buy expensive seam sealer for that area.
I actually think the asphalt-based roofing tar would be the preferable, it will seal the area completely from moisture.

Lots of options from cheap to good to best, depending on what kind of job you are doing and how much you want to spend. Your local auto parts store should have some standard old school seam sealer in caulk tubes. The newer two-part epoxy sealers are supposed to be the best, but price reflects that and you need a special dual caulk gun for them.

I used 3M self leveling seam sealer on mine.

Worked very nicely filling up the horizontal seam across the firewall. Level your cab before application and just lay it in. It truly is self leveling and fills with a smooth look.

I improvised with a standard caulking gun and some pieces of flat bar. PITA doing it that way but it worked.
