re: Complete ignition setups

Post by FORDification »

As long as the stock points-type distributor is in good shape, about all I could offer is to replace the points with a Pertronix unit (with matching coil).

Or you could get a factory electronic ignition from a later truck, which is what I'm planning on doing. Future parts replacements will be much easier when you can go into any parts store and get what you need off the shelf.

so...how good of a setup would the original '77 set-up be? the electronic dizzy and spark module box?

I've heard nothing but good things about the Duraspark setup, reliable and inexpensive, which is why I'm going with it over a Pertronix. That, and I get to keep it all-Ford under the hood.

Ok, lets say that this is a happy world and cross-breeding doesn't cause rage and hate. How do you feel about this one? http://www.carbdford.com/tech/HEI/hei.htm This is very economical, and easy to setup, so it seems like a winner to me. What do yall think about it?

Saw that article myself.

Was thinking about doing that since I had a spare chevy module laying around.

Just need the dizzy.

I wouldn't have a problem with that. I don't see why it wouldn't work just fine....(but I still think you should keep it all Ford!) ;)

Thanks for tracking that down JD, I saw it awhile back and knew it existed but lost track of it. Well I gotta say guys, I think that one set-up I referred to earlier is the way to go. I went and bought all the components today, dizzy, module, and coil for just at $74 bucks. I had a $20 autozone card, so that helped but still, without it, $94 bucks for one heck of an ignition system! After I get it all put together, I'll let yall know how it goes! Thanks for the input.

Billy, congrats on the new ignition for the killer price!

JD
I had bought one of those procomp HEI dizzys for my 460 but can't use it because the thermostat housing is in the way with the huge cap they have nomatter if you use the 90 degree or vertical. I also bought one for my buddies 351M and it fit great and he says it's running better with it on there and no more wires everywhere. I think I might have one more thermo housing to try that has an indention on the side, might work.
