Shortening bed with seam at the front edge

Post by WhitsEnd »

I've seen multiple threads that seem to be copying each other and cutting beds down right in the middle of the panel.

Has anyone ever sectioned a bump bed in a way that puts the weld at the front edge of the box?

I think it could be done with nearly zero body filler and no need to weld across the middle of the floor.

That sounds like the way to do it , in my opinion.
With some careful measuring and cutting near the front of the box, you'd have very little mud work.
I'd use a flange tool and overlap 1/4 inch instead of trying to butt weld all that.

If you're making a true shortbox you have to lose 4 inches in the rear also.

Yep, not interested in a true shortbox, and only thinking about removing 13" from the front so there will be equal bed forward and aft the wheel well. I call it a medium bed.

A little late response, but I came across these guys who have done a few bed conversions. I think they use the technique you are talking about.
