grease

Post by 19674x4 »

Okay, now that i have the whole hub assembly off, and everything is greasy, Should i get rid of this grease before i put it all back together, or just let it be. It is gray in color. Keep in mind, this assembly probably hasn't ben off in about 10 -15 years. I am getting new inner and outer bearings as well as seals.

I plan on swapping some money for parts tomorow so i need to know if i need to get grease?

I believe you should get rid of ALL the grease and replace it with new grease. It is better to over grease than undergrease.

ALWAYS remove old grease and repack wheel bearings with new grease. Be sure to clean it out very good, and put plenty of grease back in. At least as much as what was in there, if not more. And fill your bearings/races/hub shaft with grease before you install them.

filling the hubs does nothing but make a mess. it just a cover not a storehouse. if the grease get hot and melts back into the bearing it's the wrong kind of grease. so don't waste the grease and the mess.

Hmm. OK what is the correct way to repack the front wheel bearings?
Do you stuff grease into that inner cavity? Or just the bearings and the race it sits in???

A light coat on the inside of the hub and races, pack the bearing full.
Use moly grease. Make sure everthing is real clean. Use new seals. Adjust it like this, tighten the nut with a wrench as you spin the hub till it's
snug. Back it off. Now use finger power to tighten it as you spin it. Now
ck. it. You should just have a couple thou. of end play in the front, maybee
5to 10 in the back if it's a floater. Put the castle nut on and pin it.
Do it this way and you'll never have trouble.
