351 Windsor Alternator Bracket Routing

Post by mrsnicks »

Can someone please take LOTS of pictures and show me how your 351W alternators are mounted. I need to see the brackets, and how they are mounted. I made the mistake of taking them off several engines to clean them up and paint them. I just can't figure out which ones go together and how to get them mounted.

Patrick, there are I believe a couple of different versions of the rear bracket in this photo, (the bracket that mounts to the engine head). But for the most part the front bracket(s) will look like this:

Here's the other version of the rear engine head bracket that you might have:

Patrick, there is no "bottom piece" AFAIK.
The rear bracket bolts to the head, and the other two brackets bolt onto the water pump/timing cover bolts.
Unless maybe you have a different type of bracket? :hmm:

It's the blue bracket one in the top photo. The two bolt holes on the bracket in the bottom pic bolt onto your water pump. Be advised I'd seen more than one variation, (year or A/C making the water pump different) of our water pumps before that could change this? If it won't seem to line up onto the pump-maybe find your old water pump and compare it.
I had more issues matching up my power steering brackets than anything when I did my build a few years ago. It seems the 302 and 351 brackets are completely different for P.S. on our engines/trucks. :hmm:

I got it figured out. I'll post pictures tomorrow. Due to the fact that my oil dipstick tube was bent I had the piece that bolts to the head (piece with 4 holes) upside down. So no matter where/how I attempted to mount the triangular piece (3 holes) nothing would line up correctly while holding the top alternator bolt.

Attached are the pictures I found online that helped me figure it out.
