Factory battery size????

Post by Manny »

Okay so searching around here, and on Google. Factory brochures state 50 amp hour, and camper specials were available with a 70 amp hour battery. My question is what group would that be in our modern battery styles???? Group 31, group 65??? I dunno so any takers on what is right????

Almost all old Fords (and some mid 60's-70's Mopar) are Group 24. I noticed some nice AGM batteries in the Speedway Motors catalog the other day that look like the old classic batteries with the 6 round fill caps (non-functional in this case).

This is the correct modern battery, with an absolutely incorrect but fairly safe hold-down.

The factory battery is Group 27F. Apparently, 27F is no longer made so it's just Group 27. Most use 24 nowadays but notice that they aren't sized correctly according to the tray length.

Not sure about the Amp-hour ratings since all I hear about are CCAs.

FOMOCO products used group 22F, 24F and 27F. The "F" designation meant that the terminals were reversed from the "non-F" batteries from the same group sizes (just because of the way they were installed). 22F was common in Pintos and most of the 6-cylinder vehicles. 27F was used mostly in the larger passenger cars, and you found them in some trucks. The 24F was the most common, and could be used in place of many of the 22F's.

CCA ratings replace the old amp/hour rating, mostly to make it easier for sales people. The rule of thumb used to be that you matched CCA's to cubic inches for a "plain jane" vehicle (before there was all the "power" stuff...). If you had A/C and other accessories, go up one CCA level for each "group" of accessories.

I've always just bought the heaviest battery available in whatever size I need. Having the highter CCA rating meant that the battery didn't have to work quite as hard, which contributed to longer battery life. Getting the better battery always means getting a longer warranty, too.

Also, might want to consider a gel-cell battery. Optima, or others will not leak or drip acid around the tray/inner fender area. I did a partial resto on my bump in '97, bought an Optima. No more paint etching/corrosion/rust from the acid and fumes.

Thanks gusy lot of good input here. I was mainly trying to find the group size of the old school batteries. Mines got a 24 in it right now with 1035ca and 925cca's. Probably hotter than an old 70 amp hour. Amp hours went out long time back and went to reserve minutes. Here is the deal since i saw some questions above.

Amp hour rating- Can hold a load of this many amps for a time of one hour before being discharged.
Reserve minutes- number of minutes can hold a draw of 25 amps before being discharged.

So now lets see thanks to your guys input, and some math

A group 24 or 27 with a reserve minute capacity of 84 is exact modern equal to a old school 70 amp hour battery!!!!
sweet guys thanks for the input!!!!!!!!

Also i have optimas in my bronco and love them just looking to be more old school here with my 67!!!

Thanks again fella's!!!!

That's why I mentioned the Absorbed Glass Mat batteries in the Speedway catalog, I figured you might be looking for the old school look... basically the same tech as Optima in a vintage case. Unfortunately the only choices with Speedway right now are Mopar and Delco...

FOUND THE AUTOLITE VERSION !!!!

And they have the Power Punch Version made up to '68...

Got to looking today while at the store at the group 27 batteries. WOW i didn't ever realize they were bigger than the group 65's. They are pretty powerful for sure. Some up to 1000cca with 100 reserve minutes. Two of these thing would certainly do the trick for our old trucks....
