Any advice on using vinyl die?

Post by a26tford »

Hi,
I am planning on dying a black dash cap maroon to match the interior. Any secrets?

I have dyed a couple parts before. Start of with windex and clean the part very well. After that clean it with vinyl dye prep. This comes in a spray can most of the time. Make sure the part is completly dry. Then apply three coats to the part. give the paint about 5 minutes to dry between coats.

In the past. I have found the number one problem can be from human or automotive oil on the part. Like dw says, clean it, clean it, clean it. I have used 409 or Simple Green with good results also, get it very dry, fog on the first coat, then hit it good. I recommend SEM brand, available at auto paint stores and some auto parts houses, it seems to grab and last.

I have used Dupli-Color and Mar Hyde also many many time in the last 30 years.
