360 Vs 300

Post by Faltura »

Anybody ever try to replace a 360 with a 300 on a camper special with a c-6? Any gas mileage advantages? Would it be a great drop in pulling power? Fly wheel, motor mount changes required?

I did that swap in my F100. You need a Small Block bolt pattern C6. The Frame mounts are the same, just unbolt them and move them forward to the next set of predrilled holes, and you're set. I built mine quite a bit above stock, So I have more power all around, faster, tow more all of it. I get 17 mpg. I can sit next to it to work on it too. I think you will really like it. 8)

Here's my 300 build...

Ross Racing forged pistons 9.5:1, .030 over
Comp 268 Cam
Comp Roller Rockers
Clifford aluminum Valve cover
Edelbrock 500 cfm 4v carb
Ford Racing 3x13 Air cleaner with Milled Ford logo.
Ford Racing Oil cap (Chrome)
Custom bent steel vacuum and fuel lines, C/o uncle Dale
Offenhauser c series intake
Hedman header
MSD 6A
MSD Blaster II coil
Dura Spark II
Ford Racing 9mm Spk plg Wires
True duals (2.5")
Dual Flowmaster 50 series
moroso crankcase evacuation system
Stage II shift kit on the c6

Only thing else I need to do is add intake heat of some kind.
Oh and the header rubs the frame. So I may swap to EFI manifolds.
That's 325hp 450tq.

I am exploring the idea of getting an AOD, or Gearvendors for my c6. Oh, I am on the lookout for an oil bath Air cleaner from a 2 or 4v carb. :D

Intake heat? Is it cold blooded? Does the EFI exhaust manifold flow better? I've never had a 300 but i'd like too. My friend had one that ran great. :fr:

The 300 engine likes to have luke warm air. I have the offy c manifold as well and it doesn't like the cold mornings.

The EFI manifolds do not flow as well as the headers, but unless you ported the heads and have an RV can you don't need the flow of the headers. I got the headers and the intake as a package off of eBay.

I love my 300, I can rip just about anything out of the hole and hold my own for quite a ways!

There is a "hot spot" right under the carb that on a stock engine has exhaust heat hooked to it, This helps to atomise the fuel. Without it mine sputters and gags in cold weather like now. I need to do like the Clifford manifold and add coolant heat. But since the offy manifold isn't plumbed for it, I have to fab a plate to bolt to where the stock heat chimney from the manifold connects to the intake goes and plumb it for hot coolant.

This will help in the cold like The FE carb heater, and or the Exhaust crossover in the FE.

THE header does flow more, but the twin Cast Iron Shorty headers, otherwise known as EFI manifolds aren't much of a disadvantage. You need flow to rev High, And I don't need to, I have low end torque. As such I don't give two damns about High revs.

I'm doing the same swap soon in my '68 Camper Special. Will I be better off buying the 300/C6 combination together from a yard? My 360 is on a C6, & both are factory stock.

Also, would you know what year 300/C6 that used unleaded gas would be the best bet for a swap?

Thanks,
Edd

That would make things a little easier. Then you'd have everything together that you need. Although I would look for an AOD transmission, so you have an overdrive. I am going to swap my c6 for one when I find an aod.

I'd guess by 75 or 76 they had unleaded engines.

You can also buy an EFI 300 and keep the EFI or just swap on a carb.

Keep in mind, an EFI engine has no spot for the mechanical fuel pump, so you are stuck having to get an Electric one. EFI was 1987-1997.

I replaced my 360 with a 390. But if I did it again I'd go with the 300.
Still might next time around.

EDD you say your 68 camper special has a 360? Are you sure its not a 390. I thought camper specials only had 390?
I had a 1980 1/2 ton with a 300 and it was the best engine I have owned. I seized it up when the thermostat froze up, but when I let it cool down for a few hrs it fired right up and I replaced the thermostat and it never smoked.
I now have a 68 cs with a 390. When I had to rebuild the motor I debated on switching to a 300 but I decided to go with a built 390(cam headers 4 barrel carb and intake) now it sounds cool and looks good but I cant afford to drive it! I wish I had built a 300 instead.

Camper special is a package with a bunch of little things, but has little to do with the engine size. You could get a camper special with any engine you wanted.
