Light for gear indicator on column

Post by junkyardjeff »

Is there supposed to be a light for the gear indicator on a automatic column? and if so where would it be located. :?

I can imagine a manufacture making something like it today, some idiot would run down the highway in second gear because it was not lit up and try to sue because they did damage to their vehicle. Back then you had to be smart enough to count the clicks. Jeff

Funny you should say that....

The 302 that was in my 68 when I got it was blown. It happened because my friend's wife did just that. 70mph in 2nd is not good on pistons!!!

They did add a light in 73 for the indicator on column. they had the same setup as 72 and prior and i have seen a replacement setup in one of the aftermarket suppliers, LMC perhaps or one of those. however I'm not sure if it would fit in the column. it seems that it would but you would need to wire it in. I've thought about it myself. as you know the dash below is pretty dark with no lighted knobs and such and a lighted shift would be pretty cool. Tim.

Another thought is you could fabricate a light in there from parts at radio shack. all it needs to do is shine on the plastic tabs that are screwed to the inner column holding the shift indicator in place. works on the same principles as a fiber optics type setup. one of these days I'm going to try it.

That question was posted on the other site. I think I'm setting the record for the number of replys on that thread. There's a member that has a illuminated PRND21 in his '67, it looks stock until you look real close. He has what I believe to be a '73+ column in there but the frame or hood that goes around the PRND21 has been removed so it looks almost identical to the bare plastic PRND21 of our year trucks and it lights up, pretty cool!

Love it, that's over the top!

Only thing is he has to count revolutions on the speedo cable to see how fast he's going.
