shrilling noise

Post by rdmac »

i have a weird noise in my 71 302 auto. you can faintly hear it taking off, but not bad. you get to 50 to 60 mph and if you let off gas it makes the most shrilling noise i ever heard. if you keep giving it gas, it doesn't do it. you can let off gas and it will stop. it sounds like its somewhere around the tranny or end of engine. the engine has 3500 miles since rebuild and guy i bought it from said it has been doing it all the time since. do anyone have any ideas. its driving me nuts. i hope i have explained this good enough fro someone to help me. thanks

If your u joints go dry they'll squeal, but they won't vibrate until the bearings get chewed up. Greasing them will buy you some time, but when they squeal that usually means they're on their way to failure.

you guys are so smart, you need to start charging for info. i greased my u joints and most of my noise went away. you really have to play with gas pedal to make it squeal. i guess i will put in new joints soon. have a pinon seal leaking anyway, so will have driveshaft out. good time to do it. thanks again for info. i just love this site. thanks guys and keith.
