Speedometer not working

Post by rs2600 »

I have a -70 4x4 short bed, 390/4 speed and can't get the speedometer to work. Using a powerdrill at the end of the cable (at transmission end) will get it working and the plasic gear drive is good but when I put the cable back in the trans nothing happeneds. What's wrong.
Any input appreciated.
Thanks,
Mat

maybe a stripped or loose gear on the tail shaft.

On the end of the cable isn't there a flat spot or a tab that fits into the gear? I am just throughing something out there. I don't remember if the ford cables are made that way. I just did my Toyota and I do remember there was a tab at the end of the cable that fit into a groove in the gear.

Well, the tab and the plastic gear are fine so the problem must be within the tailhousing. Question was, how much work is involved in removing the tailhouse?

i think its just four bolts and removing the drive shaft yoke and maybe jack up the transmission.
