I suppose it would be more accurate to say we speak American English. I mean we took English and invented our own spelling (Color vs colour, Center vs Centre. I could go on for hours.)

We have our own slang.

We even modified the English system of measurement. In Every other Country that used to use the English System (Britain, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Canada) A pint was 20 oz, thus a quart was 40 oz, and as such a gallon was 160 oz. Whereas the US invented system is 16 oz pints, 32 oz quarts, and 128 oz gallons.

But at the end of the Day, even after all of the above I speak English, and I use English measurements. The only thing I don't use is English Slang. Albeit I could.
Just the same Someone from Mexico speaks Spanish, not Mexican. Even if it is Mexican Spanish.

I would say the only people who speak "American" are Native Tribes. :)

I have to disagree slightly with this. Mexico is no different than the U.S. Different dialects come from different areas, including accents. For example, someone from Sinaloa has a different slang or meaning of words than say, someone from Sonora. Just like my Indiana folks saying "pop" for coke and my California wife telling me it's "soda."

I was force feed 2 years of Castilian Spanish in 5 months, just to get to working at the border and speaking to people that have no idea what I was saying. It wasn't that I was a bad student/speaker of the language. I graduated with a 91% in written and conversational. Sure, some basic things translate.

If I haven't commented before, I was appalled at the display of our flag like that. I can't force myself to look at it without seeing red. :x

We have to be careful with this english language requirement. There are more than a few natural born Americans who don't have complete fluency in english. Take a look some of the posts on this website.

I think that if someone comes to this country, they should be able to speak and read english. Noone said they had to be good at it. They just need to be able to understand, rather that sit there and look like a DA. Some people here on Fordification are not good at reading or writing. They can't be good at everything. We are all on the same side here. Don't criticize them just because language is not there strongest subject.
I don't want to start anything, but noone is perfect.
