1969 4x4 crew in Oregon

Post by carbine2 »

This is a low budget back yard rebuild starting with a rolling chassis I found on Craigslist. It likely won't be pretty but I'm doing what I can without a garage. I always wanted a '69 crew 4x4 so didn't want to pass on it. Even though I don't have a place to work on it or much money. This project has been going on for a couple years now. This is the short version of the progress.

I started out with this chassis.

Manual steering needs to go.
Image

Bought a couple loose cabs. Here is one.
Image

Parts truck. A bit tired but a treasure trove of parts I want. Been parked in a field for a few years.
Image

This gantry is turning out to be my most useful tool.
Image

Another craigslist find. A short box from a '68 or '67.
Image

Found a good deal on a used 460.
Image

At this point I found out the hard way that Oregon City is not at all friendly to projects like this one. Despite several others in my neighborhood doing similar without complaint, I was taken to court (without any warnings) and told if I hadn't gotten it out of there just before the court date, they were going to fine me $240,000. More than my property is worth. Rather rude. At this point I moved it to a friends place. Turns out the wind at his place is a bit much for my garage tent.

I had it modified for power steering.

The engine is in, cab on, box sitting on the frame. Swapping the front axle for a disk brake unit.\
Image

The body is mostly on. Time to take it home. My friend is moving so I will take my chances with Oregon City. It will have good plates and tags and will be running soon with any luck.
Image

Dropping it off at home. Still an ugly truck but it is getting there. Lots of body work coming soon.

Can't say I blame them for not wanting a truck all taken apart in the neighborhood. The part that pissed me off was, I talked to every one of my neighbors about it and all but two said they didn't mind at all. The other two said they can't see into that part of the yard anyway so no problem. The city then proceeded to send the notices to the wrong address for several months. Even after this was proven the fine was still going to be $400. per day per violation (there were 4 on the list) going back to the date they started sending the notices to someone else.
The irony here is, while it was apart I was going to do the body work and have it painted. I planned for it to go together as a very nice looking truck. Now after spending the money to truck it to another town and put it back together as it is, it is going to be a perfectly legal ugly truck. Oh well.

At this point, the clock is ticking. We are selling the house so this is now a "get it driving or get rid of it" project. I'm not getting rid of my dream truck.

The truck is being stripped in preparation for the cab swap. Also likely getting the frame extended for a long box while it is at a friend's place for the cab swap.

Can’t wait to see this with the cab on it...

Neighbors suck... next place I buy gonna be no city and no HOA... and preferably no neighbors I can see or that can see me. if it has got a 10’ concrete wall all the way around it, all the better... I guess gun ports in the wall would be too much to ask for...
