Door Pin/sprint on Ford F100 Ranger 1970

Post by johnny55 »

Hi.
how do I easily change a door sprint on my pickup ford f100 from 1970. I can swing the door up and down a bit it hangs a bit with. It is best to unscrew the door completely so that only the doorways remain. or do you have any good tips ??

The hinge pins are used with bushings, look at the hinge pins - maybe the bushings are completely gone causing the loose door. Look to see if the hole that the pins go through have worn and are ‘ovaled’ out...

If the holes still look round, you can replace the hinge pins/bushings to tighten things up.
At the auto parts store you’ll need the “Help!” part, #38401.
Probably easier to replace them with the door off. Have fun!

[Sorry but what is 38401 ?? I live in Sweden and I have searched online in the United States and found hinge prints that fit my pickup and they are not that expensive apparently. But to send them to me the shipping, it really costs me. I think it's possible to buy 50 pcs in the United States because so expensive is unfortunately the shipping. Feels sad that it should be so. But do you think I should unscrew the entire door and let the hinges remain and change the sprint in the hinges and then screw the door back?

Sorry for the mis-information. Maybe the numbers have changed since I replaced my hinge pins.

Help! is a product line of Dorman brand of auto parts, they are common in the U.S. auto part stores for commonly needed parts—

Bottom line: you need to check the pin diameter and bushings and get them replaced so everything is tight on those hinge pins

I will try to order new doorsteps from the United States. but it's easy to unscrew the entire door and let the hinges remain on the pickup. This must be easy to access and put a new door pin at the top. Then put the door back. am I wrong or it's too hard to do that. it seems difficult to access inside between doors and hinges. Do you have any tips whatsoever and where I can order it and get it to Sweden

LMC Truck has what you need and they ship international.

The toughest part with removing your doors is getting everything lined back up again. You might be able to replace the pins, bushings and springs without removing the door completely if you do one hinge at a time and leave the other bolted loosely. First take a black marker and draw an outline around the hinges, door and body, so you put them where they were before you loosened the bolts. Open the door as far as you can and stick some popscicle sticks between the coils of the spring. Then partially close your door and see if you can ease the spring off. Do one hinge at a time. Tap the pin up until you can pry it out. Pull the door out until you can see the bushings and evaluate the condition of the holes. That will determine if you should go ahead and remove the door completely. Block the door away from the body with a block of wood. Using a narrow flat tipped punch, stick it inside the top bushing and tap out the bottom bushing. Reverse for the top bushing. When installing the new bushings, place the top bushing on the pin and slide it into the hole. Slide the bottom bushing on the pin along with a nut (maybe 2) just big enough to slide over the pin and rest on the bushing. Using a C-clamp, carefully squeeze the bushings in place. The pin will keep them properly centered. You might have to add more nuts on the bottom as the bushing presses into the hole and the end of the pin sticks out farther. Remove the pin, slide the hinge back in place and reinstall the pin. Then do the other hinge. When you're done, reinstall the springs. Might work, might not but it sounds worth trying.

Dive in. Fix the worn hinge pins. Get your doors working on good hinges. It’s not a hard job at all. 8)

It's really not hard. With the hinges off, it's an hour long job to do all 4 hinges. I was just trying to figure out how you could do it without removing the door. The door is just heavy and awkward to handle. If you have help, you can do it all in a short day. I've done everything on my truck all alone so I've always had to work harder.

Sargentrs :-h
around an hour. :- Too bad you live so far away, then I had brought my pickup and you would learn. yes I will try for spring. should only find new sprints to the hinges. The shipping here just gets so incredibly expensive for these little things .... suck. do you know who I need to buy? It's just for the door and it's the hinges at the top. The passenger door is perfect. so in the end I probably need only 1 for a hinge at the top
