Frozen brake line flare nut

Post by Clunker »

I've dealt with rusted bolts before, but this one has me stumped. I decided to replace a brake line on the F250 because I couldn't get one of the flares to seal. I got the wheel cylinder side to come loose, but the end that connects to the distribution block is totally frozen. A six point socket rounded the corners, and a very tight set of sharp vice grips just keeps shaving off layers of metal. I've used PB Blaster, and a torch. The sucker will not budge. Any suggestions?

Try tapping a smaller metric 6 point ( 9mm ?) on and see if that grabs.
or it might be time for a new flex line / distribution block.

A small pipe wrench will remove it.

Ah yes! A pipe wrench. I'll give that a shot, but there is very little room between the flare nut and the axle housing. Thanks for the suggestion.

Pipe wrench worked. Still took a lot of force to turn it. I can't believe the nut didn't break. Thanks again.

Acetone and ATF 50/50 is the best thing for stubborn rusted fasteners but you will need to shake it up before use as it tends to separate after sitting.
