Radiator support question

Post by brownac1983 »

I'm doing a little rust repair on my '67 F250 4x4 before it gets out of hand. My radiator support has a pretty good rust hole just forward of the battery in an area that wouldn't be too easy to make a patch for. Will any radiator support fit an F250 4x4? Or are they 4x4 specific, F250 specific, or both? There's a 2wd F100 down the road that I could get one from cheap if it'll fit. Thanks in advance.

There are super cooling supports and regular ones. i don't think there is a 4x4 specific one. You can even run one from a newer dentside truck. Check out the tech info on the main site for more details.

Thanks. I found the radiator support swap thread in the tech articles.

I thought I remembered seeing this somewhere, but I couldn't place it. I just ran across it again. Dennis Carpenter sells new radiator supports, but they specify that they won't fit 4x4s. Any idea what that's about, or what the difference is? http://dennis-carpenter.com/radiator-co ... z-16378-a/

I replaced the radiator support on my 1970 4WD with one from a 73-79 2WD. The newer ones are more readily available, less expensive, and, if I remember correctly, made from galvanized steel. I was unable to find 4WD radiator supports when I needed mine so I went with the 2WD. The difference I found between them is that the 4WD support has brackets for the radiator that are not present on the 2WD. Because the radiator mounting brackets were in good shape on my original, I drilled out the spot welds, transferred the brackets to the new support, and bolted them on after drilling complementary holes in the support. Alternatively, if the brackets on yours are shot, you could swap out your radiator for a 2WD one that mounts right to the support.

Hi,

To surmise: There are 2 different style Radiator core supports, Super-cool and everything else ("Standard, Xtra-cool, and A/C equiped"). The difference being the way the radiator mounts to the Support and the opening width of the Support.

The Super-cool has vertically mounted brackets on the engine side of the Support that the radiator mounts to. The brackets are 3 1/2 wide and 21" tall. Known as "Rear mount". All other's have the radiator mounting directly to the Core support. The Super-Cool core support has a larger opening than a non-Super-cool . Only a Super-Cool radiator with be able to mount to this Support.

Super-Cool radiators are 26 1/4W x 24 1/8H and 4 core. All others are 26 1/4W x 19 3/4H and may be 2 pr 3 core.

Below is a "cut and Paste" of a document I have concerning Core Supports, Radiators, and Shrouds:

Radiator Supports:
1967/72 F100/350: Two different radiator supports as the one for the optional Super Cooling Radiator (SC/R) has a larger opening radius.

1967/72 F100/350:

C7TZ-16138-A .. Radiator Support-Use with Standard, Xtra Cooling & A/C radiators. (not used with S/CR)

C7TZ-16138-B .. Radiator Support-Use with Super Cooling Radiator only.
1973/79 F100/350: Two different radiator supports as the one for the optional SC/R has a larger opening radius.
***My Radiator Support has an opening of 18”H x 27 1/2 W. The brackets the Radiator bolts to are 3 ½ W x ~21”H and 30” apart. This is known as a “Rear” mount***.
Radiators:
SC/R: 26 1/4" wide x 24 1/8" high x 1 ¾ thick. Other radiators are 26 1/4" wide x 19 3/4" high x 1 ¾ thick. SC/R has a HUGE top tank, is wider and deeper than the other radiator top tanks.

The Super Cooling Radiator is higher (26 1/4" wide x 24 1/8" high) than the other three, so a non Super Cooling radiator will not bolt to the Super Cooling only radiator support due to its larger opening radius.
The SC/R (Super Cooling Radiator) is 26 1/4" x 24 1/8" uses a unique radiator support.
1967 F100/250 352 & 1968/72 F100/250 360/390 optional * Super Cooling Radiator (S/CR): 26 1/4" wide / 24 1/4" high / Has a huge top tank. Possible part number = C8TZ-8005-BB.
C8TZ-8005-G .. Super Cooling Radiator: 1967 F100/350 352 & 1968/76 F100/350 360/390 / Obsolete (Per “NumberDummy” @ Ford-Truck website.)
1967 F100/250 352 / 1968/72 F100/250 Standard/Xtra Cooling & A/C radiators: 26 1/4" wide / 19 3/4" high.

Shrouds:
There are two different fan shrouds, with or without Super Cooling Radiator. S/CR specs: 26 1/4" width x 24 1/8" height /// Non S/CR specs: 26 1/4" width x 19 3/4" height.

Both have been reproduced by Dennis Carpenter, illustrated in his 1967/79 truck repro parts catalog with the dimensions. Don't have DC's catalog? Call 800-476-9653 and order the puppy.

The SC/R fan shroud (1967/76 FE: C7TZ-8146-B) is different than the non SC/R fan shroud
C7TZ-8146-B .. Fan Shroud-Use with S/CR. Marked on the upper left hand corner: C7TA-H; D2TA-HA; D3TA-JA. Fits: 1967 F100/350 352 & 1968/76 F100/350 360/390 all with S/CR.
C7TZ-8146-B .. Super Cooling Radiator Fan Shroud / Marked on upper left corner: C7TA-8146-H or D2TA-8146-HA or D2TA-8146-JA / 1967 F100/350 352 & 1968/76 F100/350 360/390 / Reproduced. (Per “NumberDummy” @ Ford-Truck web-site)

D3TZ-8146-C (replaced C8TZ-8146-K) .. Fan Shroud / Marked on the upper left hand corner: C8TA-S or D3TA-DA. Fits: 1967 F100/250 352 / 1968/76 F100/250 360/390 with Standard/Xtra Cooling & A/C radiators (not used with S/CR).

* 1967/72 F350 V8s came with the S/CR as standard equipment. Cannot recall if F100/250 Camper Specials did...or not.

Take care,
Lee

Like Lee said above the F350's and the 4 X 4 use the Super Cooling radiator support, (they are harder to find than "hen's teeth".
Here's a picture of mine in my old DRW bump.

Thanks for the picture Basketcase0302. That's the support that I have. I guess I'll lean toward fixing the one that I have.

Your quite welcome. I see your in N.C. there should be one or two in a boneyard around you somewhere nearby?
Look for any 67' thru 72' F-350 dually or 4 X 4. Sad that previous owners of our bump era trucks never kept that area by the front cab mount / radiator support, (where it collects dirt like a kids tonka truck) cleaner and not rusting out. :(

I have dual batteries. My problem spot is right in front of each battery, probably from the acid fumes.

Worst case scenario there is to find a regular bump core support and cut out those spots that are rusted and patch them into the support.
It would be better than nothing. Good luck with it!
