Engine swap?

Post by amof2011 »

Hi there, folks. Anyways, I have a quick question for ya'll. I have a 1969 F100 with a factory 240 straight six. I love the old farm truck, and have always intended on restoring it for factory condition with the original engine. Lately though, a friend of mine has been trying to get me to swap it for a 302 or 351, and the more I look at videos online of all these gnarly sounding big engines, the more I'm considering it. So, my question is should I keep the stock engine, or swap in a bigger one? Also, do ya'll think there would be any future value in keeping this engine due to everyone trading their 240's for larger ones now? Thanks for your advice.

Dare to be different and keep the six..... but upgrade to a 300 and install the 240's head on it for more compression. Do the typical upgrades like late EFI manifolds, dual exhaust, an Offy intake and either a 4V or 2V carb.

Why the 300 vs a 302? Torque at low RPMs.

A 351W is a nice option but you'll pull your hair out finding long tubes that work. Shorties are an option but then it's not reaching its potential.

Long tubes for 351? As in exhaust?

Keep the inline, upgrade to a 300ci and then pump it up. http://www.classicinlines.com/categories2.asp You can break 300hp and the inlines torque will kick it.

I passionately agree with the guys above. Get a 300. I've had both the 300 and the 302. The 300 is a true grunter. Sure the 302 sounds better, but unless you are planning to do a full 400hp build on a 302, out of the box the 300 is gonna work harder. And it will run until the end of time.

I had a 390 in my truck and upgraded to a 300 inline 6. I do realize that there are those who like big v8 engines that will question how that is an upgrade. However I prefer inline 6 engines for some of the reasons listed above.
Mine has 300hp 400tq. Connected to my 93 AOD trans it will do whatever I need it to, and just purr right along at like 1900 rpms at 65mph on the interstate in Overdrive. That makes for some pretty decent mpg. :D
1968 F100 Took the running 390 out, and installed a Built 300 with AOD.
