390 to 302 swap

Post by luke-ao »

Hello all, first post here, not sure if this is in the correct forum.

My question regard to an engine swap in my 68 F100 2wd, I'm down sizing from a 390 to 302. I'm pretty sure I need to swap the whole motor mount assembly and can't seem to find the 'none rubber' part of the mount. I'm hoping to find something online because salvage yards are not really an option at this point.

Am I correct in that I need the whole mount, not just the rubber mount?
Any ideas where I can purchase what I need?

Thanks

ideally yes you'll get the correct perches for your swap..however,you CAN get away with relocating the existing ones and using them if neccessary, the engine sits higher with them and can cause clearance issues
- still got my first first car 20+yrs later : 69 f100 sorta kinda pretending its a Mercury M100 w/a 70 f350 sport custom cab (factory buckets) 67 grille with 69 ranger cooneyes 68 merc box and hood, some supercool fiberglass fenders i scored way back when, 76 f150 disc brake frontend..currently running a 90 5.0HO 4bbl/c4 auto & 3.50 posi...originally a 360/c6 f100 Ranger with dealer added towpack (incl. kelsey hays trailer brake),boxside toolbox, behind the seat stowage & belly tank...only original parts left on 'er are the frame, rear end, rear springs, and rear bumper...

:wel: from Georgia! Post in Parts Wanted section (302 engine perches) and a member might be able to help you out. Might even be in your area.

Will I have to 'raise or lower' the 302?

I dont mind doing the fab work, is there any specific information available on what needs done for the 390-302 swap?

i can think of a tech thread off hand that has what you need. really, with these bumps finding some 302 engine perches is the easiest path. after pulling the 390, remove the perches and install the 302 perches. then drop the 302 down and BAM! its done. no modification, or clearance issues needed. im sure you know what you are doing when it comes to engines installs, but just take the path of least resistance lol my :2cents:

why are pick n pulls not an option?

what trans are you using or gonna use? just curious.

You can't really find these old fords around here anymore, so pickins are slim.

Or course if I can find replacement perches that will be the easy route, but when it comes time to drop it in I cant sit around wishing I had a set.

I will be running a C6 trans.

If your C6 is currently mated to your 390, I don't think it will bolt to a 302. Different bell housings or so I've read.

I have a 'small block' C6 for the 302.

Here's the tech thread (it just came up in another post, but in case you missed it there)

Yea, I stumbled onto that thread this morning through a google search.

I did hit the local salvage yards this morning, two of the three are now closed down and the last doesn't have the parts.

If push comes to shove and all I have to do is shorten them 1" that should not be a very big deal.

The Ford small-block (302) wasn't put into the bumpside trucks until 1969-1/2. If your truck was built before this, the small-block perches will mot be a direct bolt-in, since the (4) lower perch holes will not be present in the cross member.

However, if you obtain a pair of small-block perches, you can bolt them to the top of the frame and mark the location of the bolt holes through the holes on the lower end of the perch, remove the perches, drill out the (2) lower holes per side, reinstall the perches and you're set to put the mounts on and install the engine.
