No they did a valve job too. Do you sense something shady?

No, nothing "off". They probably just sprayed the dye in there to cut the seats. Normally speaking, when using a die to check for cracks, it's on an aluminum parts. The dye penetrates any cracks, then wipe it off and spray with a white so it shows up.

EDIT: Typed a reply but got up in the middle for something and woods had already responded. I worked as a Pipefitter for about 10 years and have seen 100s of penetrant test done and it didnt look right to me, but spraying for surfacing would cover it.

Ok, I bet they cut the valves and seats, then sprayed the die before milling. That's why no die on the valves.

Got my hot plate mostly fabbed up today. I still need to go get a big drill bit and 1/2" pipe tap for the hose barbs.

And here's my experimental aluminum cylinder head

Put a brick on that head so it doesn't float off.

Hey woods, on my head gasket the feller asked me what size bore I want. My bore is 4.030, but when using copper is the hole usually a little larger just to be on the safe side, like .010 bigger or something in that range?

10 bigger would be just fine. As long as you don't have any gasket hanging over the bore and don't have it so big that it makes a little shelf dead spot between the head and block for mixture to "hide" in.

Just got a call from Mordy at gasket works. They'll be cutting my head gasket today and shipping on monday. It will be in .022 copper with a 4.040 bore and annealed for me. This will put my quench between .036 and .046 on all cylinders (varying due to casting differences in the stock replacement pistons  ) Finally feel like some progress is being made! 8)

Is it all in the pistons or a combo of rod length and such?

Well, since I measured the quench after it was all assembled I really don't know. The crank was ground and new pistons were installed on the existing rods, so it's probably a mix of everything. I should hope that the crank was ground correctly!

Not a lot getting done today. Mom's working all weekend so it's just me and the 2 year old who decided nap time only needed to last 30 minutes. I had time to clean and organize my work area and cut a few gaskets out, but that's about it.
