how can i identify the best AOD trans to swap in my 71?

Post by harrysnyder »

I'm looking to swap an AOD transmission into my 71 bumpside. I've read on here that the 92-93? AOD's in the Ford trucks and Thunderbird super coupes had the "A" servo and bigger clutch bands, but how do I identify one of these after its been pulled from the vehicle?
I build driveshafts.

If possible I would go for the AOD from a 92 or 93 F150, because they not only have the a servo, and all the goodies, but the OD band is 2", where as the super coup one still has the 1.5 inch band. As far as how to tell what year it is, there is a 2 digit year code cast on the top of the trans behind the bell housing. Mine says 93.

Also, the ones out of the 92-93 f150 will have the much desired wide ratio gearset.
1968 F100 Took the running 390 out, and installed a Built 300 with AOD.

So just look for one with a 92 or 93 cast into the top? Weren't AOD's put in more that just F150's?

Yes they were used in tons of things,

1980–1986 Ford LTD
1980–1993 Ford Thunderbird
1980–1993 Mercury Cougar
1980–1993 Ford Mustang
1980–1986 Mercury Marquis
1982–1993 Ford Econoline
1983–1991 Ford LTD Crown Victoria
1992 Ford Crown Victoria
1983–1992 Mercury Grand Marquis
1982–1993 Ford Bronco
1982-1993 Ford F-150
1981–1992 Lincoln Town Car
1980–1987 Lincoln Continental
1980–1983 Lincoln Mark VI
1984–1992 Lincoln Mark VII

If the Junkyard doesnt know what they pulled the transmission out of, I wouldn't even buy a hubcap from them.

But this is the most important info...

•Try to avoid pre-1988 models without rear-lube enhancement. It is likely that planet bushing damage may have already occurred, mandating expensive new gear-train parts as well as an updated output shaft.
•1992-93 E and F series trucks (those with AOD’s and not E4OD’s) contain the strongest production AOD transmissions. Included is the two-inch wide overdrive band (part of the Motorsport Wide Ratio Kit, which is highly recommended for full-throttle use of overdrive or towing in overdrive) and the now-famous "A" overdrive servo.
•All Thunderbird SC supercharged V-6 transmissions contain the "A" servo (its original application) and the strong H.O. V-8 style clutches but still use the 1.5-inch overdrive band.
•In situations other than those listed above, any 1988 or later V-8 AOD transmission (steer clear of the base V-6 units) should prove adequate for most AOD buildups. Base V-6 AOD units have the weakest "C" servo, and most V-8 units to include the H.O. Mustang have the "B" servo.

Also be aware that in 1991, production began on the AODE which is the computer controlled AOD, and was used from 1991-2004. So there was some overlap in production.

This guy has GOOD solid info,,,you can take it to the bank........the only thing that I would add is: if you find something that you are interested in, look on one of the extention housing bolts for an attached tag & report the info on here. Donnie

Well, For a 429 you really only have 3 options, the first is this kit to hook it to the AOD, http://www.transmissionadapters.com/Ford%20429-460.htm
That is $795.00 for the adaptor to hook it to the non computerised Trans.

The second option is to find an E4od from a late 80s-1996 ford f250 or 350 that had a 460, and run it with a stand alone computer like this one, http://www.optishift.com/index.shtml and that is around $600.00. But the E4od itself will cost more than a non computer trans, both to purchase and to rebuild if that is needed.

Finally, the Gear vendors overdrive unit that bolts to the back of the C-6, and essentially turns the C-6 into a 6 speed auto because each gear has an overdrive. So it goes 1st, 1st OD, 2nd, 2nd OD, 3rd, 3rd OD. This setup does require a mini computer which it comes with. http://www.gearvendors.com/f2wd3s.html This setup has 2 downsides in my opinion... The first is Cost, they start at $2895.00 for the long tail, and for the short tail its $3395.00. The second downside is that the c6 has no lockup so the overdrive will cause more heat buildup, but I guess with an aftermarket cooler that could be dealt with.

You have one other option other than all the ones that are described so far, and that is:
A Hone-o-drive....they are really cool, & sought after by the guys with Baldwin Motion cars & Yenco too.....There is one on Ebay now...I have been watching it because I have one in my back room...I have not used it in a lot of years....I think the one on ebay is overpriced, but he does have all the drive shafts for a Chefell...I mean chevell er GM car..big laugh
The advantage with this unit it will make your 4;56 into a 3;23 & your 4:11 into a 2:90.
You can have the best of both worlds...AND it fits in the drive line so it can be used in these trucks...It is a planetary gear unit, shifted by a lever...NO electronics, no electric ..

My pleasure man, always feels cool for to help others. I guess other options than above would be manuals. Like the ZF5. But anyway :fr: and have fun.

mine is probably a c6 then. it has the ribs all the way down the back of it. but it may be a 80's model C6. i think the bolt holes for the starter are metric. and it has the 385 series bell on it.
