'69 360 2-Barrel Carb?

Post by BillT »

I started working on my '69 F-350 Dual Rear Wheel truck again and I'm having Carburator problems. It is a Ford 2-Barrel on my 360 Engine. When trying to adjust it, I could only find one adjuster screw. After giving it one last try (it was running way too lean and was starving for gas), I decided to rebuild it. When I pulled it and flipped it over, I verified that it only has one adjuster screw. Is this correct? My mechanic friend is also having a hard time believing that it only has one screw. We both figure that there should be two. One for the Gas and one for the Air. ???

Any info would be appreciated.

what brand of carb is it? most stock motorcraft or autolite carbs have two adjusters as far as i know. one for each barrel. there may only be one though. if its a older carb.

I believe it is the original Ford (Motorcraft?) Carb, although I couldn't find any name on it and no numbers that made much sense to me. It was pretty dirty though and some numbers may show up when we rebuild it. I also believe it is the original '69 Carb that came on the engine.

Have you or anyone out there ever heard of one that had only one adjuster screw?

if its a two barrel it should have two adjusting screws. if one had loosened up and came out then you would have a vacuum leak and indeed have a lean running condition. it may just be as simple as finding a replacement screw and replacing it.

Well that is the strange thing. I couldn't find another place for it. There does look like a place where it could be drilled and tapped, but it is solid metal. I even had my 45 year mechanic friend look at it. Could it be possible that I have some kind of non-original replacement carb?

Appreciate the pictures. It sure does look like it, but I dropped off the carb at my friend's garage for rebuilding, although I just told him to hold off for now. I'll copy the pictures for comparison. Does that carb have 2 adjustment screws on it?

I'm wondering if anyone has even heard of one with 1 screw? It looks like I have some kind of strange aftermarket replacement or a factory goof. If it is a goof, how did it run all these years? Although I sure am having problems with it now.

In the 80's there were "tamper proof" carbs that were set at the factory and had a cap over the idle mixture screws.
I don't know what Ford had, but my Dad was a mechanic at a chevy dealership,(he still drove Fords though :) )
And the required fix was to remove the carb and knock out the plugs, and I believe he had a special socket to adjust the screws.
maybe you have something like that and someone tampered with it ? :hmm:

Yeah, I remember the "tamper proof" caps. We used to have to break the plastic outer caps off in order to get back to the original screws. These were on my early 70's Chevys.

Not sure what Ford had. But so far not one person has heard of what I have. I just may have to get another carb and give up on this one.

Interesting. All the other diagrams that I've seen lately were showing 2.

The mystery continues...

Thanks for posting that.

That diagram is for reference, only, and they accomplished what they set out to do by just showing one, along with the part numbers.

Each side of the carburetor requires an adjustment screw so that the air/fuel mixture can be adjusted for each throttle bore.

I've seen the plastic caps on Motorcraft carbs, but I've never seen one with only one mixture screw.

Any chance you could post some pics?
