Which headers?! 71 F100, 302, 3 on the tree
Hey!
I´m currently rebuilding my 302. I don´t want to use the old, rusty and leaking exhaust manifolds again. Engine will get a Crower Baja Beast cam and Weiand Stealth intake, that´s why I want to get a decent set of headers for my truck. But as space for headers is quite limited I don´t know which will fit in there? It´s a ´71 F100 with 302 and 3 on the tree. Anybody ever came across a set of headers that fit in there?
Thanks!
Florian

I know many people don't like them, but i put Flowtechs on my 68 swb.It is manual steering with a 3 speed and they fit perfectly.

Flowtechs are the low end of Hooker. Racers get Hookers or Hedmans, Street Hedmans, people I don't like Blackjack.

Re: Which headers?! 71 F100, 302, 3 on the tree
Another question, not really headers related though, how would reducing the pipe diameter from 2.5" to 2" or 2.25" after the mufflers change the performance and sound?
The exhaust pipe that is under my truck right now is either 2" or 2.25", don´t remember what I measured yesterday..The header´s collector is 2.5" then I want to have some 2.5" pipe and 2.5" Hooker Maximum Flow Mufflers. After the mufflers I would like to reduce the pipe diameter to fit the currently installed tailpipe as it´s not very old..
That way I would get more backpressure...I want more low end torque..is that good or bad for my application then?
Thanks!

That is not the back pressure you want. any back pressure after a couple of feet is just pure restriction.

Re: Which headers?! 71 F100, 302, 3 on the tree
My old pipe has 2" OD. Do you think that is enough for my engine? Or should I better go with 2.5" pipe?
I read that the exit in front of the rear tire could cause problems like rapid wear of tires and/ or corrosion of aluminium wheels. So I want to exit it on the rear corners.

Re: Which headers?! 71 F100, 302, 3 on the tree
On a 302, 2"pipe is all you need. 2.5 will kill any bottom end you might have. As far as where they exit, it seems to be a matter of personal preferance. On my 69 the pipes run all the way to the rear, and exit at a "45/45" at the bed corners.

Never had one do that and all my street racers with headers exit in front of the wheels. Even added to the magic at the track when flame belches during a shift the fire wraps the tire for a split second. If Ford set the factory pipe at 2" then Ford knew that is where the engine ran best. Your 332 will breath better than a 302 for all the reasons stroker crank, cam, intake heads. a 2.5 " pipe should be just fine but not less then 2.25. With all your parts the carb calc changes. You are at .90 Volumetric Efficiency not .85 and you might be at .95 at peak if the intake comes on before the cam shuts off.
302/2*4500/1728*.85 the old calc 334 cfm
New stuff
332/2*5000/1728*.95 is 465 cfm.

If the cam power band is 1200 to 4800 and the intake is 2400 to 6000. The cam breathing is dropping before the intake is flowing it's best air. A cam and intake and headers should flow there peak and starting air rating as close to each other as possible. That is a list of intakes that flow closer to your cam. Idle to 5500

Here is the stealth range idle to 6800. This cam would be better suited to the stealth intake and the heads than the other cam.

TORQUE BEAST / PERFORMANCE LEVEL 3 - Delivers impressive
mid-range and top end power.
RPM Power Range: 2000 to 4800 / Redline: 6200 plus.

Re: Which headers?! 71 F100, 302, 3 on the tree
Okay, it might be a good idea to overthink the whole thing again, with all the changes, new heads etc..
So here are the possible parts:
Intakes:
Weiand Stealth: Idle - 6,800
Weiand Action+Plus: Idle - 5,500
Edelbrock Performer: Idle - 5,500
Camshafts:
BAJA BEAST / PERFORMANCE LEVEL 2
- Exhibits broad stump pulling power and torque. RPM Power Range: 1200 to 3800
POWER COMPU-PRO / PERFORMANCE LEVEL 2
- Perfect combination of power and mileage. Provides excellent low end and mid-range power with extended rpm’s for spirited offroad use. RPM Power Range: 1500 to 4000
TORQUE BEAST / PERFORMANCE LEVEL 3
- Delivers impressive mid-range and top end power. RPM Power Range: 2000 to 4800
Then should these be my options now:
Option 1:
Action+Plus intake / Performer intake + Baja Beast cam
Option 2:
Action+Plus intake / Performer intake + Power Compu-Pro cam
Option 3:
Stealth intake + Torque Beast cam
What would be the best combination now, with the 332cui Stroker kit and the Edelbrock Performer heads? Maybe the Power Compu-Pro cam would be a good in-between-alternative? The Baja Beast makes very much low end torque, the Torque Beast gives more mid range and top end torque.
I won´t pull a trailer with my truck, so maybe the aim should be more mid-range power?
