Has got two Flow Masters installed currently...wanted to build a new exhaust system since I first got it :D Would it be too loud to run it with headers and Cherrybomb glasspacks only? Would need to keep the current exhaust to get it back on for the technical inspection every 2 years... :shh:

I plan to get the Accel points conversion, that I have, in.
cdeal28078 wrote:If I drove it really easy I could get 18 mpg on a trip.
That was all stock, still running a points distributor. Decent economy can be gotten with a small engine in these trucks. I know that for a fact. Don't let anybody tell you different. That is running no faster than 60-65 MPH on the interstate or in your case the Autobahn.

Really? 18 mpg? Cool! I did not calculate it more than once, but on the 400km trip when I picked it up it got like 13 to 14 mpg. But that was still with the old airfilter, old spark plugs and plug wires.

cdeal28078 wrote:So do you know the story of how your truck got from the left coast of the US to Germany?
I bet that is a neat story.
It´s not as cool as it could be though  It only came to Germany as recently as 2007, when two guys bought it in SF and exported it to Germany. They didn´t drive the truck very much during the time they owned it. From the VIN I know that it was built in the Norfolk, Virginia plant and the original order came from Jacksonville, FL district. I found some evidence that one of the POs lived in Friendsville, TN. A bumper sticker it had was from a diner in Washington state. I could even contact the last owner in the US, the guy that sold the truck to the two German guys in SF. He owns a VW and Audi repair shop and we wrote two times on facebook :) My truck has already seen quite a part of the world 8)

Does Germany allow loud engines. Cherry bombs are about the loudest thing you can put on it.

WIth a mild cam and Headers the 302 could use a Holley 600 or 465. As intakes go I am not a 302 person. An Edelbrock performer will not do you wrong.

I have had cheery bombs on my truck back when it had a 351w in it. They were loud but I honestly think the flows made more noise. I hate Flow masters and this might get me kicked off the site. It is just that every truck that passes my house that has aftermarket mufflers on it I can point at and just about guarantee if it has Flow maters on it or not. They ALL sound exactly the same to me.
I had a set of 40's on mine for about 8 months and took them off and gave them to a kid down the road. He put them on a slant 6 on a Demon and I swear is sounds the same as my 71 F100 $60/c6 sounded with them on it. lol
Plus from several things I have read on line they really are not the Flow Master. lol

No need for flow Master here. All of the oval hot rod designs are patterned after the Corvair Turbo muffler. Which still out flows most mufflers so what do I put on my truck when I finally change out the hollowed out mufflers that the former owner put in.

Pushed my bump in the shop today. I finally decided to pull the engine and rebuild it. Started to remove the rest of the stuff, so that I can pull the engine tomorrow or the day after.

Well, no really. Your exhaust needs to be okay for the inspection every two years..but in the time between... :shh: Shouldn´t be extremely loud, just a semi-loud, decent sounding engine, if you know what I mean  Are glasspacks other than the Cherrybombs more quite?

Another question, which headers will fit in my truck? There´s not that much room due to the three on the tree...

The Performer intake looks fine. For the Air Gap intake, don´t you think that the power band from 1,500 to 6,500 rpm is too high for a 302 with only a mild cam? Wouldn´t the Performer from idle to 5,500 rpm fit better? I drive my truck over Summer only, so the lacking exhaust cross-over on the Air Gap would not be a problem.

A 302 in a truck needs all of the help in can get in the low end torque department so stick the idle to up type intakes. I would also ask around about the Stealth intake. I had one on a slightly warmed up 351W and it ran a lot better than it did with the Performer 351 did
Do you research well on the cam and all other parts before spending any money. Before you even take it to the machine shop research every ting and know exactly what you want out of the engine. Take into account the rear gear also

Is this the Stealth intake you´re talking about?

Looks and reads fine...and finally something non-Edelbrock

Dragon suggested me to get this cam:

http://www.crower.com/misc/cam_spec/cam ... 5&x=19&y=4

Would that make a nice setup, combined with the Stealth intake?

That is not a bad intake it is better than some for the 302. If you know the FE intakes then this is why it is better. Some after market intakes are like Low risers, I own a C5AE-C low riser the carb is almost lower than the intake top runners. Then the Stealth is like a medium riser well all the high hood clearance cars got them as all the Hi Performance 352, 390 427 4V and 428s got them. Then there is the High Riser like a Edelbrock Victor. The high risers came in cars with hood scoops like the Thunderbolt Fairlanes and some 7 liter galaxies. As the intake gets taller torque goes down and the powerband goes up.

The cam will use an airgap like it was designed for idle up.

I prefer Thrush mufflers for round glass packs they have a throaty sound without being extremely loud.

Spent some time on youtube searching muffler options.. :D I really like, no love, this one:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBM41bOLPSg[/video]

Got a 302 with Edelbrock RPM package, Hooker headers, H-Pipe and Hooker Maximum Flow Mufflers, also he writes that the pipe diameter gets reduced towards the rear..

If my truck could sound like this.. :D :D :D

I think the Weiand Stealth + the Crower Baja Beast cam (15915) would be cool. Could I keep the stock carb, that I already have, for a while with this setup, until I have enough money to get another carb? Or will the stock carb work as good as any other carb on there?

The stock carb will get you by but it won't help much. It will need rejetting to work well.

I noticed that the Crower Baja Beast cam is advertised with a basic operating range from 1,200 to 3,800 rpm. I found two others that operate between idle and 5,000, respectively 5,500.

The Edelbrock 2122:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/EDL-2122/

and the Lunati 306A1LUN:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/LUN-306A1LUN/

What about these? Wouldn´t the powerband from idle on be better than only starting from 1,200rpm on?

The Edelbrock seems to be very similar to the Crower 15915. The Lunati has got longer duration at 0.50", intake and exhaust. Both, the Edelbrock and the Lunati have a longer overlap than the Crower. More overlap means more scavenging, which means more low end torque, right?

Thanks!

Got my engine out his morning 8) Will post pictures later, the battery of my camera is empty.

Already removed the exhaust manifolds, carb, distributor, intake and one head. The pistons look worn.

So I reckon I´ll have to get new pistons also..What do you guys think about the engine rebuild sets available from Summit?

For example:

As the cam is designed for 289/302 on a 302 it will be usable lower down. What is a real radical cam on a 352 is a mild cam on a 500 cubic inche stroker.

Now you don't drive at idle. I mean drive anywhere or do any work. Do you? My FE can, I can put it in second and go up a hill with very little gas. Though idle on my truck idle is almost 1000 rpm. Bur I can't turn sharp corners and other things all I can do is climb and if it is too steep the truck idles lower and lower until it stalls. A FE has way more torque than an 302.

Similar cams are not the same cam More overlap does not mean more power at an idle. Scavenging needs more rpm to be effective. At low rpm too much overlap and/ or duration makes for a lumpy idle. Lumpy idle means not enough engine vacuum and that means fuel gets wasted.

The Lunati has way less duration but more lift. A low rpm cam that revs high. 10 degrees of duration difference from 1 cam to another makes for a big difference in performance even if everything else is the same.
