68 390 teardown-update
I tore down the motor today to see what went wrong with it and this is what I found. The rest of the engine seemed ok.
Does anyone by chance have an extra connecting rod they might want to sell and how much?

Why is it that the trucks are always the best running vehicles in the family?

Re: 68 390 teardown
Ouch man! I just moved, if I had seen this before I moved I had a set of 390 and a set of 360 rods. Hopefully someone has one to hook you up tho!

Re: 68 390 teardown
I have been telling people FE rods don't break. The cap came unbolted on that one. From the 390 to the 428 all the rods are the same length but the weights are not.

Re: 68 390 teardown
Think you may be needing a crank for that too....

Re: 68 390 teardown-update
Hey guys. This is what I found on further teardown and need some help with some questions. Thanks for any help. I haven't rebuilt a motor since high school which was 1988 and I had my dad's help back then.
This is at the bottom of the cylinder. The crank had a couple marks that look not so great either. My questions are:
1. Is the block still usable?
2. If not, I also have a 360 that I'm wondering could I use the block and rebuild it with the parts from the 390 since I thought they were the same block?
3. Can I use the crankshaft from the 360 with the 390 parts?
Thanks again for any help with this.

Re: 68 390 teardown-update
That is minor scuff marks. The 360 rods nope if you want a 390 the piston and rods need to go over along with the 390 crank to the 360 block.

Re: 68 390 teardown-update
Thanks guys. I knew I would find some more damage but was hoping the block was not hurt. I saw the scuff marks and did not think they were too bad either. I'm just wondering if the block is still usable with the little chip out of the cylinder wall at the bottom. Otherwise , I will use the 360 block and rebuild it with the 390 parts. I'm hoping the crank is salvageable. The marks are more like dents but are pretty good ones. I'll see if I can get a good picture tonight so you can see the marks.

Re: 68 390 teardown-update
I would use the 360 block, that one is probably usable but if you have another...
Also, that looks like pitting on the cyl. wall, I'm not sure what would cause that I usually only see that on bearing surfaces or liners
It looks like that rod bolt broke, if both nuts are still on (can't see both in the pic)
I also have a super clean block that has never bean boared but I dought you'ld want to ship it haha
A machine shop will be able to fix up your crank for you too.

Re: 68 390 teardown-update
That might not be pitting at all. Just flakes of junk.
Id like to see what the crank looks like.

Re: 68 390 teardown-update
Here is what the crankshaft looks like. The dents are not as bad as they could have been. Is this usable? The dents are not deep or sharp and I wouldn't think they would affect the bearing as long as everything was cleaned up real good. I can disassemble and reassemble the motor but just am not good with the specs and that stuff. Thanks guys

I'd be looking for a crank if it were me.

That crank is pretty much toast...

Why is it that there's seldom time to fix it right the first time, but there's always time to fix it right the second time???
That's not an oil leak That's SWEAT from all that HORSEPOWER!!

Re: 68 390 teardown-update
You might save it by going .010 under but it took a beating. I knew that from the rod pics as that crank journal is what hammered that rod cap out straight and mashed the rod end in.

Re: 68 390 teardown-update
Since you are in Idaho, on the other side of the state are 2 places you might be interested in.
In Shelley or Firth, there is a mechanic/machinist named Oily, he is an FE block guru and has alot of parts.
In Idaho Falls, there is a machine shop, Jerry's Machine, that has a good supply of turned craks on hand. Bought the crank for my 390 there, it is still running 10 years later. Just take your old one to him, then you do not have to worry about a core charge.
