H-Pipe on 390- FYI

Post by dustman_stx »

This may have been hashed out before, but I thought I'd relay my experiences. As most know, I've built a pretty agressive 390- pretty good size cam (Comp 292S roller, IIRC). I have been running it with true duals. I just got my H Pipe installed, and it made a huge difference. Before, the truck was just obnoxious when driving through town. Really rough. Somtimes when going 30 or so I'd shift it to 2nd just to try to get it to smooth out. Now, 1500 RPM just bogging around, it runs pretty smooth. Much more pleasurable to drive. Don't know that I really gained anything performance wise, however. So, to sum it up- the H-Pipe is a great investment if you have an agressive cam and want to smooth it out. BTW- I got my kit (3") from Summit for $49.95.

I'm going to do this in the next couple weeks... add a crossover.. I expect a major difference in engine idle quality & sound.

If you are using a pretty agressive cam, you'll likely notice a huge difference. Mine was more pronounced at low speed putting around than at idle.

Good day Dustman_stx,

Thanks for posting this review of the H pipe. I plan on putting an H or X in my exhaust system for sure, especially after reading things like this!

FWIW, I haven't heard or seen an X Pipe on an FE, but on a 4.6 Mustang, the X pipe seems higher pitched and raspier. Reviews seem to indicate such an insignificant performance difference that I couldn't justify the extra expense and installation trouble of the X pipe. Plus, I personally prefer the sound of the H Pipe, at least on the limited applications where I've heard both.

Good morning Dustman_stx, thanks for replying!

That's interesting! Now that you mention it, I think I heard this from other members also (that the H may sound more mellow and pleasant than the X, with similar performance benefits). Perhaps an H is in order then.

Thanks again!

i added the H-pipe on my 302 when i put the headers on it. i have a .484 lift crane cam and it made it have a deeper mellower tone that sounds amazing! it has alot more power and torque as well.

I have heard that this equals the pressure for both sides of the system is this correct?

I just had an balance pipe put in mine... feels like a different motor.. smoother.. quieter... I expect that my gas mileage has improved too. :)

I learned about H pipes when I saw one on my 351C Cobra Jet Gran Torino years ago, I asked a Ford drag racer if it helped any and he said that it balances or equals out the exhaust flow and and makes the engine smoother. When I had my duals made for my 68 390 I had the muffler shop put a H pipe in the system. It made the tone of the exhaust a lot mellowerand even. :2cents:
