Pictures of the "half" hanger flip?
I was cruising thru the search for dropping the rear of my truck. I know about the shackles, axle over leaf, even flipping the hanger. But I came across the "half" hanger flip, but the pictures for it weren't working.
What is this? I think this may be a good option for me as I am only looking for about a 3 inch drop. I still have the overload spring (the thick leaf on the bottom) and stock shackles.
If the half hanger flip isn't for me, what would be my options to accomplish this?
Thanks guys!
Josh

Excellent pictures thank you.
Quick question, it looks like you were able to re-use two of the original factory holes for the flip, correct?
Again, thanks for the pics.

I was able to(use 2 holes on each side) but I went as extreme as i could go. If your not going all the way you might have to drill all four.I'm just not sure . I think ezernut went half some one will chime in I'm sure. If I can help holler.Bullitt390 wrote:Excellent pictures thank you.

i did the "half" hanger flip and did reuse two of the holes. just flip it over and rebolt the two bottom holes then drill for the two top holes. (note: i didn't cut off the excess in case i wanted to go back to stock down the road).

That looks like the direction I should be headed in. I only want to drop the rear about 3" and still utilize a couple of the factory holes. I want to make sure the axle stays true in relation to the frame.
Did you still have to install angle shims to correct the pinion angle?
Awesome pictures, thanks!

Really depends on how far you go. But more than likley, That's one of my next step , pinion angle. But Brad and some of the others have put it in the 6 degree range, and I'm close enough to what he did give or take a spring leaf here and there. Thats what I'm going with, gonna use a 4 degree and 2 one degree till I get it ironed out then gonna have the steele ones made. There is a link someplace that has links to crawler sites that lay out the drive line angle and pinion angle nightmare pretty good . if you want I've got several book marked and I'll pm ya the links.Bullitt390 wrote:That looks like the direction I should be headed in. Hmmm... 3 degrees is really nothing. You have to take into account axle wrap, which the 4X4 links that were provided do not account for.
The rule of thumb is to set the transmission angle and axle angle the same. I.e if the trans points DOWN 3 degrees, you have the axle point UP 3 degrees.
But, during a hard take off, much like drag racing the axle will wrap counter to forward progress, so again if the trans points down 3 degrees, you might end up setting the axle @ 0 or +1 degree to make them even during the launch.
3 degree difference won't make much of a difference, especially moving it out of the garage. Maybe down the highway at 75MPH, but not as was mentioned.
I would venture to guess you had the axle aligned funky and when you took everything apart to add the shims you at that moment got everything aligned correctly.
I appreciate the pictures, I may not tackle this swap until next month, so we'll see what the truck needs once it's all said and done. I was just wondering what to expect once I start digging in.

Talk about irony....I just put together a new article for the BumpWiki specifically addressing the pinion angle issue.

Cool picture too. :)
But. ;)
Can I talk you into removing them stinkin split ring "un-lock" washers? :/
You don't see them on the original frame parts like where the brake backing
plate bolts to the axle and you don't see them on the flywheel etc etc.
Even grade 8 solid washers are just another place for looseness to creep in.
No washers... unless you've absolutely have to have 'em, IME.
If you really want it to stay put... then -double nut- the sucker! ;)

hmm. never gave it much thought. although i do remember a thread about washers a while back. something about engine stand nuts and no washers. so i should go washerless then? how about lock tite? or just bare.

Washers just add another spot for problems/looseness to creep into the system.ezernut9mm wrote: never gave it much thought.

Split ring "lock" washers are the worst for letting trouble start, in my experience.
Only use grade 8 washers or spacers when you feel as tho you really -have- to.
On a trailer ball... take the "un-lock;)" washer off and replace it with another full
sized nut if you've got enough threads, otherwise use a jam nut. And use a real
wrench not a springy Cresent wrench with a cheater pipe on it. BTDT and right
afterward turned the nut down tight with the ring-end of a combination wrench.
A cowboy friend of mine uses one nut but drills a hole through the nut and bolt
and puts a nail in it, started that practice before losing a trailer, just got tired of
loosing nuts. LOL :)
I don't know anything worth repeating about Lock-Tite. Sorry. :/
