72 F100 project, longbed to short conv, CV swap, 20s

Post by JG F100 »

Really enjoy everyone’s build threads and though I’d contribute…

I’ve taken over working on this truck as my dad doesnt really want it anymore. He thinks he paid $100 or maybe just a six pack sometime in 1996. He thought we could re-sell it and make a quick buck. This is the only picture I could find taken by an old Polaroid but you get the idea. It didn’t run and was full of trash. But it had something very important, a title, which I just transferred into my name.

Image

We rebuilt the old 360 back then and we've probably put less than 100 miles on it so far. Over the years most of the rust was cut out and repaired, including floor and cab mounts, nothing fancy plus a few odds and ends.

Fast forward a decade or so and this is what it looks like. It still has a few rust spots, engine still fires up but not a straight body panel in sight.

At first I wasn't too interested in this as it was a longbed and I've always preferred the sportiness of shortbeds. Saw guys doing lwb to swb conversions and thought why not? As you can see it wasn't in the best of shape anyways, the free paint job from a few years ago was already peeling, plus the guy used too much bondo.

Chop chop!! 16 inches taken out, no turning back now…

Image

I started with the saw-zall but my old man whipped out his torch and said this is how they used to do frame work on semi’s back in the day. ok… but plasma would have been nicer.

Maybe I should have made the cut going the other way as the frame gets a little wider under the cab. Made sure everything was square and welded fishplates on the insides. Probably box in depending on what rear suspension I go with, I’d like to go four link, maybe parallel or triangulated. Put some por15 on it for now…

New brake line, $4 at the local auto parts store. With the in cab tank, there isn’t much to shorten. I just took out the extenders on the parking brake

LWB to SWB pretty much done, now just need work on the bed

I looked for a decent short bed but couldn't find one locally so I started cutting the long bed as it was pretty solid.

Notice the thick body filler on the bottom, yuck! The passenger side "bump" has quite a bit of body filler too, it looks like it was sideswiped at some point.

I've never done anything like this before but wanted to give it a shot. With 16" taken out the front section its more of a mid-sized bed, still need another 4" section taken out from the rear to make a true short bed.

This "new" bed has a rusted out floor and wheel wells but the bed sides looks better than mine. I cut out the entire front section including most of the support channel.

Luckily I had a left over piece from the long bed and some sheet metal I bent into shape...

Since I still dont know how much I'm going to lower this truck I'll leave the floor as is for now, I might raise the bed floor.

Those welds didnt come out as nicely as I hoped, heard someone once say it didnt matter as long as you knew how to grind

welded up all the holes, it looked like this door had 3 different sets of mirrors!

Put the door on yesterday, WOW lining up a door is hard! its close but nowhere near where it should be plus now i have to slam it a little, before it would click shut so nicely!

that's it for now, i need to get the lower valance and passenger side fender on.

Very nice

I cheated when I did mine, I did the frame only :) I had a good bed.

Good work, that frame will handle anything the stocker would

no there are two different beds in those pics. the first one is a long bed with the front shortened. the second one is a shortbed that he repaired.
