I need A trans parts but only know the trans ID number?

Post by FoMoCo »

I have a non-granny gear four speed. I think its from a early 80's but not really sure. I want an electric speed sensor but I'm not sure what to get not knowing what this came out of. The part number is RF-E4TR-7A040-AA.
Thanks for your help

Nick, is that the top shift, external linkage sideshift or the SROD side shift style. All are overdrive 4th gear. What are youi trying to accomplish? Digital speedo or computer install? I have a friend who put a 2003 5.3 engine into a 65 chevy shortbed and he bought a box that converts electronic signal back to mechanical to run the original speedo.

I tried and was unable to cross the number you have posted. :? Do you happen to see any other I.D. on the trans?
From what I remember about the speed sensors the first style Ford used were like thishttp://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayI ... ename=WDVW
These were mounted between two speedo cables
A very common sensor number used in the 70's and early 80's
D4AZ.9E731.B (D4AF-BA stamp I.D. on sensor)---Similar to the style shown in this auction

It "looked" kinda like the second one you posted. The mounting hole looks identicle to the one on my 3.03 But I was told this trans is from an 86 so surely that wouldnt be a cable. There was a nub left when I received the trans. So all I can do is assume. But the second pic looks like it would install into my trans.
Thanks

The cool part is that this was a direct swap for the 3 on the tree tranny.

In the 80's truck catalog there is pretty much just one number used (this style)on the trucks. It shows parts number E4AZ.9E731.AA (Motorcraft # dy-923) If you can find one to look at you may be able to compare this with what you have left for a part. I ran a locator for this in your area and a Walt Sweeney West Hills Ford shows one in Cincinnati

I found that tranny in the book. I don't think I have seen one before. It looks like it was mainly used from 84-86 in some f100,f150's and could even have been in some broncos
Ford has it listed in the catalog as TS-O/D, F/4/S Trans I.D. should start
with RTS-__ __ . These could have been behind 300,302 and some 351's
mostly 2wd trucks but there is a couple of applications for 4wd (not yours of course by the tail extension)

That sounds like it. I know it came from an 86 f-seriers with a 300 straight six. It was very hard to find this trans. It's awsome for street use, just like my mustang.
Thatnks for your help 4x4x4!

Those trannys are getting hard to find. I have a friend who converts them to use in stock Model As so they have overdrive. I think they might go all the way back to 79. The tranny is a basic variation of the top loader. Jeep used the same tranny, only not overdrive and I have heard those internals will swap. Anyway, the Model A swap doesn't use any of the tailhousing and I think he still has those. Is there anything off one of those that you can use? Is your autometer speedo electronic? If so what kind of a signal does it need? How many wires? Somewhere I have one of those little signal generators from a 71 or 72 that had something to do with emissions. The speedo cable went through it and it has 2 wires coming out the side. I'm guessing some sort of Hall effect switch, but not sure.
